Man sentenced to death for Abu Dhabi road rage murder

ABU DHABI // One of two brothers accused of killing a man in a road rage incident has been sentenced to death - while the other brother has been acquitted.

The Criminal Court put little stock on the claims of MS, an Emirati, that he had been left half-paralysed in the fight he instigated after forcing a fellow driver off the road. He attended his court hearings on a bed, but prosecuting lawyers said this was a ruse to gain sympathy.

The court sentenced him to death, but acquitted his brother, of assault that caused the death of the other driver, a diabetic Emirati in his 50s.

MS had become incensed when the other driver overtook him on the road, so decided to repass him before forcing his vehicle to stop on the hard shoulder. He beat the other driver severely in the fight that followed, yet the man was still conscious when police arrived at the scene. He identified the two brothers to officers as his attackers, but died soon after arriving at the hospital.

All death sentences are subject to automatic appeal.
