An arrested drug suspect attempted to bribe a policeman with Dh2 million to let him go, Dubai Criminal Court heard on Wednesday.
The Pakistani accused, 30, was being questioned by police for his alleged involvement in promoting drugs on October 25 last year when he made the bribe.
“I was questioning him at the anti-narcotics department when he spoke to me in Pashto offering me the money,” the officer told prosecutors.
The man allegedly offered to pay the officer Dh2m in return for his help.
The policeman said he played along and asked the man how he would be paid.
“[The accused] asked if the other officers understood Pashto and I told him ‘no’, to lure him into talking further about the bribe.”
The accused asked the policeman for his bank account number and promised to send him the money.
“He told me he will send the bank details to some of his men in Pakistan and have them deposit the money in my account,” the officer said.
The policeman filed a report, which led to the accused to be charged with offering a bribe.
He denied the charge in court and will receive his verdict on August 30.

UK's plans to cut net migration
Under the UK government’s proposals, migrants will have to spend 10 years in the UK before being able to apply for citizenship.
Skilled worker visas will require a university degree, and there will be tighter restrictions on recruitment for jobs with skills shortages.
But what are described as "high-contributing" individuals such as doctors and nurses could be fast-tracked through the system.
Language requirements will be increased for all immigration routes to ensure a higher level of English.
Rules will also be laid out for adult dependants, meaning they will have to demonstrate a basic understanding of the language.
The plans also call for stricter tests for colleges and universities offering places to foreign students and a reduction in the time graduates can remain in the UK after their studies from two years to 18 months.
