Police have arrested a man who drove the wrong way up a major Dubai road and deliberately collided with a patrol car.

Officers noticed a 4x4 - which did not have a registration plate - driving against traffic on Expo Road (Jebel Ali to Lehbab Road).

The driver ignored police instructions to stop.

“He refused to comply ... before hitting the police patrol car, endangering the lives of other road users in the process," said Brig Saif Al Mazrouei, director of Dubai traffic police.

The driver then sped to Emirates Road in the direction of Sharjah before a tyre burst and forced him to stop. The man, along with two others in the car, were then arrested.

“Driving a vehicle without a plate number in a way that endangers people's lives and causes damage to property while failing to comply with police orders, is punishable with no less than a month and no more than three years in prison,” said Brig Al Mazrouei.

It was not clear when the incident took place or when the case will be heard next. But the penalty also includes a fine of up to Dh300,000 and suspension of a driver’s license for two years.
