Dubai Criminal Court on Wednesday jailed a gang of six Bangladeshis for 10 years each for forcing a girl, 16, into prostitution.

They trafficked her into the country and tried to make her work in a brothel. When she refused, she was raped, the court heard.

The Bangladeshi teenager’s ordeal came to an end only when Dubai Police raided the brothel.

Judges heard how a female defendant, 36, offered the orphaned girl a maid’s job in the UAE.

Two other defendants, both male, forged the teenager’s passport to make her look older.

When she arrived in the country, she was taken to an apartment in Dubai’s Karama district.

At the flat, she was told she had to work as a prostitute. She refused and was beaten and raped.

For the next two weeks, the girl was locked up in a different apartment where two defendants took turns to rape her.

“They forced me to have sex with five to sex men per day until the flat was raided by police,” she told the court.

Dubai Police were tipped off about the girl and assigned two officers to work undercover. They put the apartment under surveillance, raided the brothel and detained the gang.

The defendants, all from Bangladesh, aged between 22 and 48, were convicted of human trafficking, rape, running a brothel and facilitating prostitution.

They have two weeks to appeal.

Florida: The critical Sunshine State

Though mostly conservative, Florida is usually always “close” in presidential elections. In most elections, the candidate that wins the Sunshine State almost always wins the election, as evidenced in 2016 when Trump took Florida, a state which has not had a democratic governor since 1991.

Joe Biden’s campaign has spent $100 million there to turn things around, understandable given the state’s crucial 29 electoral votes.

In 2016, Mr Trump’s democratic rival Hillary Clinton paid frequent visits to Florida though analysts concluded that she failed to appeal towards middle-class voters, whom Barack Obama won over in the previous election.

Six tips to secure your smart home

Most smart home devices are controlled via the owner's smartphone. Therefore, if you are using public wi-fi on your phone, always use a VPN (virtual private network) that offers strong security features and anonymises your internet connection.

Keep your smart home devices’ software up-to-date. Device makers often send regular updates - follow them without fail as they could provide protection from a new security risk.

Use two-factor authentication so that in addition to a password, your identity is authenticated by a second sign-in step like a code sent to your mobile number.

Set up a separate guest network for acquaintances and visitors to ensure the privacy of your IoT devices’ network.

Change the default privacy and security settings of your IoT devices to take extra steps to secure yourself and your home.

Always give your router a unique name, replacing the one generated by the manufacturer, to ensure a hacker cannot ascertain its make or model number.
