Etisalat clerk accused of phone fraud

An Etisalat clerk denies using phantom accounts to make calls that mounted up to Dh918,000 in bills, court hears.

DUBAI // An Etisalat clerk created 134 bogus accounts then used them to make calls and mobile balance transfers worth Dh918,000, a court heard today.

MA, 35, a Pakistani who worked at the Festival City branch, applied for the post-paid mobile lines using forged salary certificates and copies of passports of people who worked for a private company he owned, prosecutors told Dubai Criminal Court.

"He attached fake passport copies and certificates to the applications without the customers' knowledge and then activated the service and started using the lines to make calls," a financial manager at Etisalat said.

The clerk denied the charge and the case was adjourned to May 27.

Real estate tokenisation project

Dubai launched the pilot phase of its real estate tokenisation project last month.

The initiative focuses on converting real estate assets into digital tokens recorded on blockchain technology and helps in streamlining the process of buying, selling and investing, the Dubai Land Department said.

Dubai’s real estate tokenisation market is projected to reach Dh60 billion ($16.33 billion) by 2033, representing 7 per cent of the emirate’s total property transactions, according to the DLD.
