A man who worked for a contracting company in Abu Dhabi will spend six months in jail after accepting a Dh10 million bribe in return for helping another company win bids for major projects in the emirate.
The man — whose nationality and age were not disclosed in court records — was head of the department responsible for reviewing tenders for electric engine material supplies.
His job also involved selecting which tender to push through. To justify choosing the bids of the company that bribed him, he would submit fake proposals with prices 230 per cent higher than the market price — making the bids from the benefiting company appear the best choice.
It is unclear how his illegal activities were discovered but he was reported to police by his employer. The contracting company had conducted an internal investigation that included a written confession from the accused.
In his confession, the manger admitted to pocketing Dh10m between 2005 and 2015 from the owner of the company he helped win the projects.
In September last year, Abu Dhabi Court of First Instance convicted the manager and two other men of fraudulently obtaining cash by submitting false tenders.
When they first appeared in court, on May 6, 2016, the trio denied the charge but were convicted and sentenced to six months in prison each.
All three appealed their sentences, seeking acquittal, but the contracting company counter-appealed, seeking a harsher sentence.
On January 15, the verdict against them was upheld and the court ordered them to pay the contracting company's legal fees.
The court also ordered the case filed by the contracting company to be heard at the civil court.

Real estate tokenisation project
Dubai launched the pilot phase of its real estate tokenisation project last month.
The initiative focuses on converting real estate assets into digital tokens recorded on blockchain technology and helps in streamlining the process of buying, selling and investing, the Dubai Land Department said.
Dubai’s real estate tokenisation market is projected to reach Dh60 billion ($16.33 billion) by 2033, representing 7 per cent of the emirate’s total property transactions, according to the DLD.

La Mer beach is open from 10am until midnight, daily, and is located in Jumeirah 1, well after Kite Beach. Some restaurants, like Cupagahwa, are open from 8am for breakfast; most others start at noon. At the time of writing, we noticed that signs for Vicolo, an Italian eatery, and Kaftan, a Turkish restaurant, indicated that these two restaurants will be open soon, most likely this month. Parking is available, as well as a Dh100 all-day valet option or a Dh50 valet service if you’re just stopping by for a few hours.
