Latest: How to spot a recruitment scam in the UAE

Dubai Police have arrested a group of men for running a fake recruitment agency and exploiting 150 vulnerable jobseekers.

The men posted fake high-paying jobs on social media and asked candidates to send money to their bank accounts.

“They asked victims to transfer money they claim would cover costs like recruitment fees, taxes or booking interview appointments,” said Brigadier Jamal Al Jalaf, director of Dubai Police’s general department of criminal investigation.

Each candidate was asked to pay between Dh1,000 and Dh3,000.

One applicant paid Dh3,000 to secure an employment visa, Brig Al Jalaf said .

“In light of the global pandemic and the rise in the number of jobseekers, the gang managed to defraud 150 individuals,” he said.

Police officers and officials of the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation arrested the group after receiving a tip-off.

“Our team arrested the suspects, and seized payment receipts and slips condemning the gang’s illegal activities,” he said.

Brig Al Jalaf cautioned jobseekers against fake employment schemes.

“Actual recruitment agencies never ask for payments or for any sensitive personal information,” he said.
