Nearly 1,600 motorists opted to have their cars impounded at home in January and February, Dubai Police said.
Launched in 2018, the smart impound service gives drivers the option to pay a fee to keep an impounded vehicle at home, rather than having it moved to a police impound yard.
To ensure drivers do not attempt use their cars, a tracker is installed.
Brig Saif Muhair Al Mazroui, director of the General Directorate of Traffic at Dubai Police, said 1,598 motorists used the smart service in the first two months of 2021.
“This system has given motorists a third option of keeping their impounded vehicles at home, instead of having them taken to a police lot or paying a sum of cash in return for not having them impounded,” he said.
Police said 6,775 drivers used the service in 2020.
Motorists pay a monthly fee of Dh420 ($114), until their cars are released after paying outstanding fines.
“Since it was launched in 2018, the service has helped motorists keep their impounded cars outside their own villa or in their own parking lot,” Brig Al Mazroui said.
The tracker installed in the car notifies police if the vehicle is driven.
“The car will be visible on a map in the command room and the device will send a notification if it moves,” Brig Al Mazroui said.
Motorists will be fined for moving an impounded car and the vehicle will be towed to a police impound lot.
Requests to use the service can be made via the Dubai Police app or website.

Who is Mohammed Al Halbousi?
The new speaker of Iraq’s parliament Mohammed Al Halbousi is the youngest person ever to serve in the role.
The 37-year-old was born in Al Garmah in Anbar and studied civil engineering in Baghdad before going into business. His development company Al Hadeed undertook reconstruction contracts rebuilding parts of Fallujah’s infrastructure.
He entered parliament in 2014 and served as a member of the human rights and finance committees until 2017. In August last year he was appointed governor of Anbar, a role in which he has struggled to secure funding to provide services in the war-damaged province and to secure the withdrawal of Shia militias. He relinquished the post when he was sworn in as a member of parliament on September 3.
He is a member of the Al Hal Sunni-based political party and the Sunni-led Coalition of Iraqi Forces, which is Iraq’s largest Sunni alliance with 37 seats from the May 12 election.
He maintains good relations with former Prime Minister Nouri Al Maliki’s State of Law Coaliton, Hadi Al Amiri’s Badr Organisation and Iranian officials.

The Marina and Jumeirah Beach Residence are popular locations, says Mr Grudziecki, due to their closeness to the beach, restaurants and hotels.

- Research equivalent Airbnb homes in your location to ensure competitiveness.
- Post on all relevant platforms to reach the widest audience; whether you let personally or via an agency know your potential guest profile – aiming for the wrong demographic may leave your property empty.
- Factor in costs when working out if holiday letting is beneficial. The annual DCTM fee runs from Dh370 for a one-bedroom flat to Dh1,200. Tourism tax is Dh10-15 per bedroom, per night.
- Check your management company has a physical office, a valid DTCM licence and is licencing your property and paying tourism taxes. For transparency, regularly view your booking calendar.
