Dubai man jailed for attacking police officer with meat cleaver

DUBAI // A man who attacked a police officer and his brother with a meat cleaver was on Monday morning sentenced to a year in prison.

KK, a 32-year-old Emirati, denied assaulting the policeman and his brother when he appeared at the Dubai Criminal Court earlier this month.

"I did not do it," KK said in court.

Prosecutors said that on January 27 last year Emirati MA was at a petrol station when the defendant and two other men attacked him with meat cleavers. MA's brother, EA, a policeman, aged 22, arrived at the station by coincidence and saw his brother being assaulted.

EA rushed to help and was hit on the forehead and left hand with a cleaver. He sustained serious injuries and fractures and was left with a 3 per cent permanent disability to his forehead.

The three men ran away after assaulting the brothers. EA called police who took him and MA to Rashid Hospital for treatment.

Prosecutors said the defendant has a criminal record for similar assaults.
