DUBAI // A man posed as a Red Crescent worker to fraudulently obtain Dh405,000 worth of steel, a court heard today.
YA, a 34-year-old Syrian, was arrested in a sting operation by police after a manager at the company became suspicious of his large order, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.
The manager, the 37-year-old Jordanian QA, tipped officers off following a visit by the Syrian on July 16, during which the Syrian introduced himself as an Emirati Red Crescent employee who wanted to buy 200 tonnes of steel.
"We informed him that only 150 tonnes were available," the manager said.
He then received a call from a man pretending to be the Syrian's supervisor, but when he called the Red Crescent he was told they had no such employee. The manager called police, and officers went to the company's premises to await the Syrian's arrival.
He visited the company on July 21 and was arrested after presenting the manager with a forged purchase order in the Red Crescent's name.
Also charged was EO, a 38-year-old Emirati prison inmate who was said to have helped plan the crime.
Neither man entered a plea. The next hearing is scheduled for May 22.
