DUBAI // Abed Al Boom, convicted in February of 3,695 charges of fraud and sentenced to 923 years and nine months in prison, was freed yesterday on bail while his appeal continued.
The Dubai Misdemeanours Court of Appeal granted bail after several guarantees were provided, including seizure of the passports of Al Boom, his wife, his adult sons and five Emiratis who would pay Dh500,000 if he missed a hearing without a valid excuse.
The bail application was submitted by the advocate Hassan Jumaa Al Ranteesi. Ali Al Falasi, Al Boom's defence lawyer, said the decision was expected.
Al Boom, an Emirati, has been found guilty of breaching the trust of 3,706 investors and embezzling Dh960 million.
Judge El Saeed Bargouth, who issued the verdict, acquitted him of 11 charges of fraud. Al Boom's five co-defendants, who included his brother and two women, were cleared of all charges.
Despite the long prison sentence, Al Boom might serve only 10 years in jail, the maximum under the UAE penal code when combined sentences add up to 20 years or more.
Al Boom spent investors' money on parties, boats and luxury cars. Only 1 per cent of the stolen money was recovered.
His defence had argued the charges violated a decree by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, stopping all proceedings against him. Judge Bargouth dismissed that argument because prosecutors charged Al Boom two months before the decree was issued.
The next hearing will be on November 11.

Tomato and walnut salad
A lesson in simple, seasonal eating. Wedges of tomato, chunks of cucumber, thinly sliced red onion, coriander or parsley leaves, and perhaps some fresh dill are drizzled with a crushed walnut and garlic dressing. Do consider yourself warned: if you eat this salad in Georgia during the summer months, the tomatoes will be so ripe and flavourful that every tomato you eat from that day forth will taste lacklustre in comparison.
Badrijani nigvzit
A delicious vegetarian snack or starter. It consists of thinly sliced, fried then cooled aubergine smothered with a thick and creamy walnut sauce and folded or rolled. Take note, even though it seems like you should be able to pick these morsels up with your hands, they’re not as durable as they look. A knife and fork is the way to go.
Pkhali
This healthy little dish (a nice antidote to the khachapuri) is usually made with steamed then chopped cabbage, spinach, beetroot or green beans, combined with walnuts, garlic and herbs to make a vegetable pâté or paste. The mix is then often formed into rounds, chilled in the fridge and topped with pomegranate seeds before being served.

His life in brief: Born in a village near Galilee, he lived in exile for most of his life and started writing poetry after high school. He was arrested several times by Israel for what were deemed to be inciteful poems. Most of his work focused on the love and yearning for his homeland, and he was regarded the Palestinian poet of resistance. Over the course of his life, he published more than 30 poetry collections and books of prose, with his work translated into more than 20 languages. Many of his poems were set to music by Arab composers, most significantly Marcel Khalife. Darwish died on August 9, 2008 after undergoing heart surgery in the United States. He was later buried in Ramallah where a shrine was erected in his honour.
