ABU DHABI // Two local children's charities will see an influx of more than Dh1.9 million following the Saadiyat Beach Classic golf tournament.
The funds, which will benefit the Ability Centre for Special Needs and the Emirates Autism Centre, were raised during a gala dinner attended by celebrities and athletes.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and the Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, matched the more than Dh900,000 raised at a live and silent auction, bringing the total to nearly Dh2m.
The amount tops the Dh1.2m raised at last year's tournament.
"We are delighted with the support we have received this year," said Sheikh Sultan bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, the chairman of the Tourism Development and Investment Company, which organised the event. "The Saadiyat Beach Classic is a great event now firmly on Abu Dhabi's calendar."
Some of the proceeds will also go to the Player Foundation, a US-based non-profit aimed at providing education to underprivileged children, which was founded by golf legend Gary Player, who also designed the Saadiyat Beach Golf Course.
Some of the luxury items sold at the auction included a portrait of Sheikh Zayed created by the students at the Emirates Autism Centre and a Saadiyat Beach Golf Course Annual Passport for 2011.
Earlier this month, administrators at the charities said the funds would be used to help parents pay school tuition and to boost existing programmes.

SUNDERLAND 2002-03
No one has ended a Premier League season quite like Sunderland. They lost each of their final 15 games, taking no points after January. They ended up with 19 in total, sacking managers Peter Reid and Howard Wilkinson and losing 3-1 to Charlton when they scored three own goals in eight minutes.

HUDDERSFIELD 2018-19
Joined Derby as the only team to be relegated in March. No striker scored until January, while only two players got more assists than goalkeeper Jonas Lossl. The mid-season appointment Jan Siewert was to end his time as Huddersfield manager with a 5.3 per cent win rate.
ASTON VILLA 2015-16
Perhaps the most inexplicably bad season, considering they signed Idrissa Gueye and Adama Traore and still only got 17 points. Villa won their first league game, but none of the next 19. They ended an abominable campaign by taking one point from the last 39 available.
FULHAM 2018-19
Terrible in different ways. Fulham’s total of 26 points is not among the lowest ever but they contrived to get relegated after spending over £100 million (Dh457m) in the transfer market. Much of it went on defenders but they only kept two clean sheets in their first 33 games.

Uefa Nations League: How it works
The Uefa Nations League, introduced last year, has reached its final stage, to be played over five days in northern Portugal. The format of its closing tournament is compact, spread over two semi-finals, with the first, Portugal versus Switzerland in Porto on Wednesday evening, and the second, England against the Netherlands, in Guimaraes, on Thursday.
The winners of each semi will then meet at Porto’s Dragao stadium on Sunday, with the losing semi-finalists contesting a third-place play-off in Guimaraes earlier that day.
Qualifying for the final stage was via League A of the inaugural Nations League, in which the top 12 European countries according to Uefa's co-efficient seeding system were divided into four groups, the teams playing each other twice between September and November. Portugal, who finished above Italy and Poland, successfully bid to host the finals.
