DUBAI // A nine-year-old boy has died after suffering nausea and vomiting.
Awad Khan was taken to a hospital in Deira at the weekend along with his parents and 15-year-old brother, Azeen, after they all became ill.
The rest of the family was recovering in hospital last night.
Dubai Municipality is now investigating the suspected case of food poisoning and is due to publish a report today.
The Indian family, who live in Al Muteena, were admitted to Al Baraha Hospital early on Saturday.
Awad's father, Firoz Khan, said yesterday that he was not sure if his family had food poisoning or if pesticides sprayed at a neighbour's house had triggered their illness.
"We do not know if it was food poisoning," he said. "There was some pest control being done at our neighbour's house. It is possible the fumes spread through the air conditioning. We are OK now."
Mr Khan said Awad was a special-needs child who was studying at Al Noor Training Centre. He died after being taken to hospital.
"We all woke up with vomiting and diarrhoea," Mr Khan said.
He said police were investigating the cause of the child's death and the family's condition.
His son's body was taken to the police mortuary.
Hospital staff said the other family members were recovering.
"The condition of the parents and the boy is stable," said a member of hospital staff.
He said the family had been shifted from the emergency ward to the general ward on Saturday. "If they are fine, they will be discharged [today]," he said.

How to join and use Abu Dhabi’s public libraries
• There are six libraries in Abu Dhabi emirate run by the Department of Culture and Tourism, including one in Al Ain and Al Dhafra.
• Libraries are free to visit and visitors can consult books, use online resources and study there. Most are open from 8am to 8pm on weekdays, closed on Fridays and have variable hours on Saturdays, except for Qasr Al Watan which is open from 10am to 8pm every day.
• In order to borrow books, visitors must join the service by providing a passport photograph, Emirates ID and a refundable deposit of Dh400. Members can borrow five books for three weeks, all of which are renewable up to two times online.
• If users do not wish to pay the fee, they can still use the library’s electronic resources for free by simply registering on the website. Once registered, a username and password is provided, allowing remote access.
