Beat Antenna hit another high note with Keane slot

The Dubai-based newcomer band Beat Antenna are to support the British rock band Keane when they play in the UAE on their debut Middle East tour next month. Fresh from being voted Dubai's best rock group last month by readers of Time Out, the four-man band have already earned a reputation supporting acts such as The Charlatans and Arrested Development.

Beat Antenna, whose members are from Britain, formed in Dubai last summer, releasing debut EP, Half Now, Half Later, in April this year. "It's a great opportunity to share a stage with Keane," said Beat Antenna's lead singer, Neil Harrison. "They have great songs and we are looking forward to doing our thing - showing people what we are about and how far we have come." Keane will play to thousands of fans at the Madinat Arena at Madinat Jumeirah on July 8 as part of their world tour to coincide with the release of their third studio album, Perfect Symmetry. The tour has already seen the group - singer Tom Chaplin, pianist and songwriter Tim Rice-Oxley, and Richard Hughes on drums - play gigs across North America.

Keane won plaudits for their debut album, Hopes and Fears, in 2004. Their second album, Under the Iron Sea, won them the Best Band title at the GQ awards. Their latest album climbed to the top of the British album charts in October. chamilton@thenational.ae Win concert tickets at www.thenational.ae/keane

The National photo project

Chris Whiteoak, a photographer at The National, spent months taking some of Jacqui Allan's props around the UAE, positioning them perfectly in front of some of the country's most recognisable landmarks. He placed a pirate on Kite Beach, in front of the Burj Al Arab, the Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland at the Burj Khalifa, and brought one of Allan's snails (Freddie, which represents her grandfather) to the Dubai Frame. In Abu Dhabi, a dinosaur went to Al Ain's Jebel Hafeet. And a flamingo was taken all the way to the Hatta Mountains. This special project suitably brings to life the quirky nature of Allan's prop shop (and Allan herself!).
