Abu Dhabi man accused of stealing Dh14,000 of client’s money

ABU DHABI // A man accused of stealing money from a client asked the Appeals Court to have mercy on him because he was jobless for ten years.

Y, an Emirati, is alleged to have taken Dh14,000 from KQ, also Emirati, on the understand he would provide her with a driver. KQ claims that despite taking her money, the driver was not provided.

“I received money from her, I won’t deny that, but there has been a misunderstanding,” he told the court on Tuesday.

He said he received Dh7,000 as a down-payment and he was supposed to receive the second half after he provided the driver.

He insisted he did not plan to trick the woman and that this was the result of a misunderstanding.

“So what are your requests now? The First Instance Court sentenced you to three months,” asked the chief justice.

“I want mercy, I have been jobless for ten years and I have two wives and children, I used to do any small job I find, I went out in the sea ... just to feed my family and children.”

“And I cannot afford to lose this new job, I finally found it less than two years ago.”

He added that he has been in jail for more than a month.

A verdict will be announced next week.
