INSEAD's Abu Dhabi campus is the institution's third site to open, after those in France and Singapore. The campus dean, Frank Brown, said the decision to open in Abu Dhabi was made as early as 2004. "It didn't take long to work out that Abu Dhabi would be the place. The vision of the leadership connected with that of INSEAD. Building human capital is vital for a country wishing to diversify."
At yesterday's graduation, he said the research undertaken at INSEAD would benefit both the institution and the region. "We are keen to learn from the rich heritage of this region," he said. The campus now has eight resident faculty members and a worldwide network of 40,000 alumni. Its first executive MBA, the newest of its programmes, starts in October. Since its inception in 2007, it has already run over 30 programmes for 900 students.
In the Financial Times 2010 MBA rankings of international business schools, INSEAD was in fifth place. "Among all the business schools, we are by far the most international," said the institution's honorary chairman, Claude Janssen. "We're not just opening a subsidiary, like many institutions. People here were very keen to have us come. There was a very strong motivation to have a high-level and international education.
"We thought Abu Dhabi was the closest to our concept of an international location." When the school opened its Singapore campus 10 years ago, it was felt economic development was greatest in the Pacific Basin. A decade later, the Middle East is now the focus. "This region has been one of the fastest-growing in the world," said Mr Janssen.

Two-step truce
The UN-brokered ceasefire deal for Hodeidah will be implemented in two stages, with the first to be completed before the New Year begins, according to the Arab Coalition supporting the Yemeni government.
By midnight on December 31, the Houthi rebels will have to withdraw from the ports of Hodeidah, Ras Issa and Al Saqef, coalition officials told The National.
The second stage will be the complete withdrawal of all pro-government forces and rebels from Hodeidah city, to be completed by midnight on January 7.
The process is to be overseen by a Redeployment Co-ordination Committee (RCC) comprising UN monitors and representatives of the government and the rebels.
The agreement also calls the deployment of UN-supervised neutral forces in the city and the establishment of humanitarian corridors to ensure distribution of aid across the country.

Real estate tokenisation project
Dubai launched the pilot phase of its real estate tokenisation project last month.
The initiative focuses on converting real estate assets into digital tokens recorded on blockchain technology and helps in streamlining the process of buying, selling and investing, the Dubai Land Department said.
Dubai’s real estate tokenisation market is projected to reach Dh60 billion ($16.33 billion) by 2033, representing 7 per cent of the emirate’s total property transactions, according to the DLD.

The smuggler
Eldarir had arrived at JFK in January 2020 with three suitcases, containing goods he valued at $300, when he was directed to a search area.
Officers found 41 gold artefacts among the bags, including amulets from a funerary set which prepared the deceased for the afterlife.
Also found was a cartouche of a Ptolemaic king on a relief that was originally part of a royal building or temple.
The largest single group of items found in Eldarir’s cases were 400 shabtis, or figurines.
Khouli conviction
Khouli smuggled items into the US by making false declarations to customs about the country of origin and value of the items.
According to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, he provided “false provenances which stated that [two] Egyptian antiquities were part of a collection assembled by Khouli's father in Israel in the 1960s” when in fact “Khouli acquired the Egyptian antiquities from other dealers”.
He was sentenced to one year of probation, six months of home confinement and 200 hours of community service in 2012 after admitting buying and smuggling Egyptian antiquities, including coffins, funerary boats and limestone figures.

Their provenance is described in near identical terms as the British Museum shabti: bought from Salahaddin Sirmali, "authenticated and appraised" by Hossen Rashed, then imported to the US in 1948.
