ABU DHABI // About 7,400 animals were sacrificed for Eid Al Adha on Saturday at slaughterhouses in the capital.
Dr Najdat Mohammed Nour, head of veterinary control at the automatic slaughterhouses, said the number of butchers had been increased to 170 to cope with the large amount of livestock that was due to be sacrificed for the religious festival.
He said the facilities, at Baniyas and Shahama, had taken all necessary precautions to maintain hygiene standards and ensure public safety.
Al Ittihad, the Arabic-language sister newspaper of The National, reported that some people had to wait up to two hours to make their sacrifice.
There were also complaints that the price of livestock was particularly high this year.
Eleven cattle were found to be unfit for human consumption, so they were put down instead of being ritually sacrificed.

Real estate tokenisation project
Dubai launched the pilot phase of its real estate tokenisation project last month.
The initiative focuses on converting real estate assets into digital tokens recorded on blockchain technology and helps in streamlining the process of buying, selling and investing, the Dubai Land Department said.
Dubai’s real estate tokenisation market is projected to reach Dh60 billion ($16.33 billion) by 2033, representing 7 per cent of the emirate’s total property transactions, according to the DLD.
