SHARJAH // Police have seized more than 600,000 pills of the illegal stimulant Captagon in a case they say demonstrates the scale of the challenge Gulf nations are facing in dealing with the drug trade.
Officers have charged a man who they say planned to distribute the drugs within the UAE and in neighbouring countries.
The man, whom police described as Arab, is said to have smuggled the drugs into the country within a shipment of diet pills and appetite suppressants. Police estimate the drugs are worth Dh18 million (US$4.9m).
Brig Yousef Musa al Naqbi, the director of Sharjah CID, said the man was arrested when he was observed receiving the shipment.
"At first we received a tip from local sources about an Arab national selling a large quantity of forbidden sleeping pills," he said.
"We matched this information with information from another Gulf country where the pills were presumed to have come from."
The man was placed under surveillance, and police witnessed him receiving the shipment and arrested him in possession of the 600,000 pills.
Captagon is the brand name for a synthetic stimulant called fenethylline, which was invented in the early 1960s.
It was banned worldwide but is popular as a recreational drug in many Arab countries.
The pills are often counterfeited, and frequently contain only a small amount of fenethylline. Brig al Naqbi said police believed the shipment was one of the largest seized in the country and highlighted the challenge that was still facing the Gulf region in the control of drugs. Drug dealers were constantly devising new ways to evade detection, he said.
In February, Dubai Customs seized 651,000 of the pills bound for Dubai.
Brig al Naqbi said the exchange of security information among Gulf states was crucial in the fight against drugs and that information from another Gulf state was crucial to this case.
The arrested man has been referred to Sharjah Public Prosecution.

The more serious side of specialty coffee
While the taste of beans and freshness of roast is paramount to the specialty coffee scene, so is sustainability and workers’ rights.

Real estate tokenisation project
Dubai launched the pilot phase of its real estate tokenisation project last month.
The initiative focuses on converting real estate assets into digital tokens recorded on blockchain technology and helps in streamlining the process of buying, selling and investing, the Dubai Land Department said.
Dubai’s real estate tokenisation market is projected to reach Dh60 billion ($16.33 billion) by 2033, representing 7 per cent of the emirate’s total property transactions, according to the DLD.

The struggle is on for active managers
David Einhorn closed out 2018 with his biggest annual loss ever for the 22-year-old Greenlight Capital.
The firm’s main hedge fund fell 9 per cent in December, extending this year’s decline to 34 percent, according to an investor update viewed by Bloomberg.
Greenlight posted some of the industry’s best returns in its early years, but has stumbled since losing more than 20 per cent in 2015.
Other value-investing managers have also struggled, as a decade of historically low interest rates and the rise of passive investing and quant trading pushed growth stocks past their inexpensive brethren. Three Bays Capital and SPO Partners & Co., which sought to make wagers on undervalued stocks, closed in 2018. Mr Einhorn has repeatedly expressed his frustration with the poor performance this year, while remaining steadfast in his commitment to value investing.
Greenlight, which posted gains only in May and October, underperformed both the broader market and its peers in 2018. The S&P 500 Index dropped 4.4 per cent, including dividends, while the HFRX Global Hedge Fund Index, an early indicator of industry performance, fell 7 per cent through December. 28.
