UAE best places to work: These companies have the happiest employees, survey says

Latest: Companies in UAE should consider offering menstrual leave, workplace experts say

THE One, Pizza Express, Century Financial and Transworld Group have topped a survey of the best workplaces in the UAE.

Out of 50 companies included in the result, they took the top spots in the Great Place to Work 2022 survey’s small to medium-sized company category.

In the large-size company category, Dubai Police Academy, Leminar, DHL Express, Hilton and McDonald’s were ranked highest in a top 20 list.

The annual report is compiled by management consultancy Great Place to Work, which compiles the survey in 60 countries.

Researchers sends out a 'trust index' to employees of companies, which measures how they are being treated at the company, if they are being fairly paid and if they feel informed about management decisions, among other issues.

This index has about 85 per cent of weight in the annual report, with the other 25 per cent is based on a survey that is sent to employers, measuring quality of leadership.

Ibrahim Mougharbel, Great Place to Work's managing director for the UAE, Qatar, Oman and Kuwait, said to make it to the top of the list, a company had to excel in a number of areas.

"We have 59 statements under the trust index," he said.

"It's a ranking system, where the employees actually say if they feel involved, informed, fairly paid and treated, proud of the work they do for the company, if they feel that they have accomplished something, they're proud of it or they just feel like a number."

The survey's authors said top-rated companies focused on morale, training and learning opportunities – and injected some fun into the workplace in what was a difficult time for many workers.

Retail company THE One was ranked number one in the small and medium-size category again this year, because of its "quality leadership".

"If you ask me what's so special about THE One, their CEO, the owner of the business, is quite attentive in terms of making sure that every employee gets a great experience," said Mr Mougharbel.

"He's very interested. So, one of the key things that is so special about THE One is leadership effectiveness – that leaders are interested in their people and they put the people at the forefront of their thinking."

UAE salary guide 2022

Dubai Police Academy has moved up 13 places from last year to take top spot in the large category.

The survey's authors said: "The Academy was fully inaugurated in 1989 and has taken in students from Arabic countries such as Yemen, Oman, Lebanon and the Palestinian Territories, where it continues to maintain international standards of teaching.

"Dubai Police Academy has moved up an incredible 13 ranks from last year simply by putting their people first."

Tearful appearance

Chancellor Rachel Reeves set markets on edge as she appeared visibly distraught in parliament on Wednesday.

Legislative setbacks for the government have blown a new hole in the budgetary calculations at a time when the deficit is stubbornly large and the economy is struggling to grow.

She appeared with Keir Starmer on Thursday and the pair embraced, but he had failed to give her his backing as she cried a day earlier.

A spokesman said her upset demeanour was due to a personal matter.

Explainer: Tanween Design Programme

Non-profit arts studio Tashkeel launched this annual initiative with the intention of supporting budding designers in the UAE. This year, three talents were chosen from hundreds of applicants to be a part of the sixth creative development programme. These are architect Abdulla Al Mulla, interior designer Lana El Samman and graphic designer Yara Habib.

The trio have been guided by experts from the industry over the course of nine months, as they developed their own products that merge their unique styles with traditional elements of Emirati design. This includes laboratory sessions, experimental and collaborative practice, investigation of new business models and evaluation.

It is led by British contemporary design project specialist Helen Voce and mentor Kevin Badni, and offers participants access to experts from across the world, including the likes of UK designer Gareth Neal and multidisciplinary designer and entrepreneur, Sheikh Salem Al Qassimi.

The final pieces are being revealed in a worldwide limited-edition release on the first day of Downtown Designs at Dubai Design Week 2019. Tashkeel will be at stand E31 at the exhibition.

Lisa Ball-Lechgar, deputy director of Tashkeel, said: “The diversity and calibre of the applicants this year … is reflective of the dynamic change that the UAE art and design industry is witnessing, with young creators resolute in making their bold design ideas a reality.”

Top investing tips for UAE residents in 2021

Build an emergency fund: Make sure you have enough cash to cover six months of expenses as a buffer against unexpected problems before you begin investing, advises Steve Cronin, the founder of DeadSimpleSaving.com.

Think long-term: When you invest, you need to have a long-term mindset, so don’t worry about momentary ups and downs in the stock market.

Invest worldwide: Diversify your investments globally, ideally by way of a global stock index fund.

Is your money tied up: Avoid anything where you cannot get your money back in full within a month at any time without any penalty.

Skip past the promises: “If an investment product is offering more than 10 per cent return per year, it is either extremely risky or a scam,” Mr Cronin says.

Choose plans with low fees: Make sure that any funds you buy do not charge more than 1 per cent in fees, Mr Cronin says. “If you invest by yourself, you can easily stay below this figure.” Managed funds and commissionable investments often come with higher fees.

Be sceptical about recommendations: If someone suggests an investment to you, ask if they stand to gain, advises Mr Cronin. “If they are receiving commission, they are unlikely to recommend an investment that’s best for you.”

Get financially independent: Mr Cronin advises UAE residents to pursue financial independence. Start with a Google search and improve your knowledge via expat investing websites or Facebook groups such as SimplyFI.

The outcome of the labour court proceedings can directly affect eligibility.
