Latest: Austrian chancellor keen to explore renewables and hydrogen collaboration with UAE
Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, arrived in Austria on an official visit on Thursday.
Sheikh Mohamed touched down in Vienna shortly after 3pm, state news agency Wam said.
During the visit Sheikh Mohamed will hold talks with the Austrian Chancellor, Sebastian Kurz, discussing the long-standing ties of friendship between the UAE and Austria, as well as regional and international issues of mutual interest.
The two men will discuss peaceful coexistence, economic co-operation, parliamentary co-operation, tourism and Expo 2020 Dubai, which is expected to strengthen bilateral ties between the countries.
Speaking on Thursday, Mr Kurz, Europe's youngest leader, said he looked forward to working with the UAE on the development of renewables and hydrogen technology, which both countries are heavily investing in.
"We strive to work more closely together, especially in the field of renewable energies and hydrogen," he told UAE state news agency Wam.
The relationship between the UAE and Austria dates back 50 years, to the era of Sheikh Zayed, the Founding Father, and the Austrian chancellor at the time Bruno Kreisky, who first met in 1973.
The nations' bilateral ties were established on March 10, 1974, and have been based on several factors that helped to strengthen their partnership.
Both countries share common beliefs regarding the principles of peaceful coexistence and tolerance, which have been a key foundation of strengthening their bilateral ties.
The UAE and Austria support international security, stability and development, and believe in the importance of combatting terrorism and terrorist ideas promoted by extremist groups and armed militias around the world.
Tourism is another area of co-operation between the UAE and Austria. Flights between the two countries are expected to gradually return to their pre-Covid capacity, particularly in light of Expo 2020 opening in October.
The UAE is the key economic partner of Austria in the region, while Austrian companies are increasing their presence in the Emirates to benefit from the opportunities provided by Emirati markets to investors – most notably in the heavy machinery and service sectors.
Expo 2020 Dubai will also offer Austrian companies an opportunity to grow their business in the UAE by showcasing the country's technologies and sustainability, smart cities and renewable energy efforts.
The two countries are also developing their strategic economic partnership and several meetings have been held to promote mutual trade and investment.
The principal areas of economic co-operation include the digital economy, innovation, information and communication technology, renewable energy, water, logistical services and aviation.
The UAE and Austria have established a solid parliamentary relationship, with ideas, expertise and knowledge exchanged between the countries at international parliamentary events.

What is Folia?
Prince Khaled bin Alwaleed bin Talal's new plant-based menu will launch at Four Seasons hotels in Dubai this November. A desire to cater to people looking for clean, healthy meals beyond green salad is what inspired Prince Khaled and American celebrity chef Matthew Kenney to create Folia. The word means "from the leaves" in Latin, and the exclusive menu offers fine plant-based cuisine across Four Seasons properties in Los Angeles, Bahrain and, soon, Dubai.
Kenney specialises in vegan cuisine and is the founder of Plant Food Wine and 20 other restaurants worldwide. "I’ve always appreciated Matthew’s work," says the Saudi royal. "He has a singular culinary talent and his approach to plant-based dining is prescient and unrivalled. I was a fan of his long before we established our professional relationship."
Folia first launched at The Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills in July 2018. It is available at the poolside Cabana Restaurant and for in-room dining across the property, as well as in its private event space. The food is vibrant and colourful, full of fresh dishes such as the hearts of palm ceviche with California fruit, vegetables and edible flowers; green hearb tacos filled with roasted squash and king oyster barbacoa; and a savoury coconut cream pie with macadamia crust.
In March 2019, the Folia menu reached Gulf shores, as it was introduced at the Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay, where it is served at the Bay View Lounge. Next, on Tuesday, November 1 – also known as World Vegan Day – it will come to the UAE, to the Four Seasons Resort Dubai at Jumeirah Beach and the Four Seasons DIFC, both properties Prince Khaled has spent "considerable time at and love".
There are also plans to take Folia to several more locations throughout the Middle East and Europe.
While health-conscious diners will be attracted to the concept, Prince Khaled is careful to stress Folia is "not meant for a specific subset of customers. It is meant for everyone who wants a culinary experience without the negative impact that eating out so often comes with."
