AL AIN // Silence stretched across the grounds of Al Ain International Airport as the assembled crowd awaited the arrival of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed, then Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi.
Among them was the duty manager Rashed Al Shamsi. Now the airport's operations manager, Mr Al Shamsi remembers standing there on March 31, 1994, along with the others who had worked for months to have the airport ready in time for its official opening.
Then Sheikh Khalifa arrived. He walked along the red carpet towards the red ribbon in front of the freshly painted terminal building. As he cut the ribbon, the crowd erupted in cheers.
Behind the terminal an empty Gulf Air plane touched down on the runway, signifying the airport was ready for incoming flights.
"Of course everyone was happy when the airport was opened," said Mr Al Shamsi.
Since then the airport has been busy, introducing new flights - it now operates 14 a week, catering for about 4,000 passengers - and constantly adding improvements to keep passengers happy.
The airport has been successful. In March, a global passenger satisfaction survey ranked Al Ain International Airport fourth in the world, beating Dubai International Airport, which ranked at 26th, and Abu Dhabi International Airport at 27th.

Real estate tokenisation project
Dubai launched the pilot phase of its real estate tokenisation project last month.
The initiative focuses on converting real estate assets into digital tokens recorded on blockchain technology and helps in streamlining the process of buying, selling and investing, the Dubai Land Department said.
Dubai’s real estate tokenisation market is projected to reach Dh60 billion ($16.33 billion) by 2033, representing 7 per cent of the emirate’s total property transactions, according to the DLD.

TEACHERS' PAY - WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Pay varies significantly depending on the school, its rating and the curriculum. Here's a rough guide as of January 2021:
- top end schools tend to pay Dh16,000-17,000 a month - plus a monthly housing allowance of up to Dh6,000. These tend to be British curriculum schools rated 'outstanding' or 'very good', followed by American schools
- average salary across curriculums and skill levels is about Dh10,000, recruiters say
- it is becoming more common for schools to provide accommodation, sometimes in an apartment block with other teachers, rather than hand teachers a cash housing allowance
- some strong performing schools have cut back on salaries since the pandemic began, sometimes offering Dh16,000 including the housing allowance, which reflects the slump in rental costs, and sheer demand for jobs
- maths and science teachers are most in demand and some schools will pay up to Dh3,000 more than other teachers in recognition of their technical skills
- at the other end of the market, teachers in some Indian schools, where fees are lower and competition among applicants is intense, can be paid as low as Dh3,000 per month
- in Indian schools, it has also become common for teachers to share residential accommodation, living in a block with colleagues
