More than 100 workers who complained against their employer for not paying their wages have been paid thanks to the Labour Cases Section at Dubai Courts.
Last month, the 126 workers, who are from India, Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh, filed complaints against the construction company they worked for and said they hadn’t been paid for three months.
“They told us that they tried to speak to their management several times and every time they were given promises that were not fulfilled,” said Hamad Abdullah Ali, the head of the Labour Cases Section.
The workers had already registered their complaints with the Ministry of Labour, which handed them arraignment sheets and forwarded them to court so a case could be opened.
“When dealing with group complaints filed against the same employer, we make use of the Mobile Court, so we headed to the workers at their gathering place and started negotiations but we were faced by an obstacle, which is that the employer is not present,” said Mr Ali.
He said that they managed to reach the company’s representative later, who negotiated on behalf of the employer and immediately paid the workers one month's salary each while the payment of the overdue salaries was arranged with the representative to be done the following month.
The workers received one month's wages, ranging from Dh1,000 to Dh1,200 each, but the total amount overdue to them amounted to almost Dh400,000. It is not known whether the remainder of the money has been paid yet.
Water waste
In the UAE’s arid climate, small shrubs, bushes and flower beds usually require about six litres of water per square metre, daily. That increases to 12 litres per square metre a day for small trees, and 300 litres for palm trees.
Horticulturists suggest the best time for watering is before 8am or after 6pm, when water won't be dried up by the sun.
A global report published by the Water Resources Institute in August, ranked the UAE 10th out of 164 nations where water supplies are most stretched.
The Emirates is the world’s third largest per capita water consumer after the US and Canada.
