10 injured at Jebel Ali Port as ship hits crane causing it to fall

DUBAI // Ten people were injured when a ship hit a crane at Jebel Ali Port in Dubai last week.

Port operator DP World said the crew of a container vessel were trying to berth at Terminal 1 when it hit the harbour wall and the leg of a crane, causing it to topple.

It said a second crane was pushed off its rails during the accident on Thursday but remained upright and stable.

Nine people suffered minor injuries, while another man was treated for a fractured arm and leg, and is in a stable condition.

“DP World’s terminal safety teams responded immediately to the incident and head office global safety teams joined them on site within five minutes,” the company said.

“Working with external emergency response teams, the area was evacuated and an exclusion zone created. Safety drones were also deployed to survey the area, locate anyone in need of medical assistance and ensure the safety of the responding crews.”

An investigation is under way and the collapsed crane will be removed when the investigation is finished. The second crane is being assessed for safety and will not be used until further notice.
