Music festivals are well and truly back this summer.

After a cautious start last year, which saw a number of events held with limited capacity due to Covid-19, the circuit is back on song in 2022, with more than a dozen festivals taking place across Europe and North Africa.

Along with the UK’s Glastonbury, featuring headliners Kendrick Lamar and Billie Eilish, and the EDM haven that is Belgium’s Tomorrowland, there is a growing number of small boutique festivals well worth tuning into.

From reggae music in the forests of Slovakia to jazz and rock in Morocco's Casablanca, here are 10 festivals you won't want to miss.

June 3 to 5: Vestrock

Where: Hulst, Netherlands

Headliners: Editors, Wolfmother, Martin Solveig and The Darkness

Why go? Held on an island in the fortified medieval city of Hulst, a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Amsterdam, the festival is renowned for its intimate vibe, with up to 10,000 people watching more than 50 acts across four stages. The line-up is slanted towards the early 2000s, featuring big rock and indie music acts.

Nepotism is the name of the game

Salman Khan’s father, Salim Khan, is one of Bollywood’s most legendary screenwriters. Through his partnership with co-writer Javed Akhtar, Salim is credited with having paved the path for the Indian film industry’s blockbuster format in the 1970s. Something his son now rules the roost of. More importantly, the Salim-Javed duo also created the persona of the “angry young man” for Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan in the 1970s, reflecting the angst of the average Indian. In choosing to be the ordinary man’s “hero” as opposed to a thespian in new Bollywood, Salman Khan remains tightly linked to his father’s oeuvre. Thanks dad.
