Even Brett Favre thought the Minnesota Vikings were done - for the game, and quite possibly the season.
Trailing by 14 points with less than five minutes to play against Arizona, the Vikings were struggling and the home fans were booing what appeared to be another losing effort.
But suddenly, Favre caught fire, engineering another jaw-dropping fourth-quarter comeback that may have not only saved the Vikings' season, but could also have kept Brad Childress, their coach, in a job.
Favre threw for a career-high 446 yards to rally the Vikings to a tie at the end of regulation time, and Ryan Longwell's 35-yard field goal in overtime lifted them to a 27-24 victory over the Cardinals on Sunday.
"There was a point in that game where I think everyone in the building thought this is not going well. We don't stand a chance," said Favre, who has 46 career fourth-quarter comeback wins. "But we did."
Favre threw a 25-yard touchdown to Visanthe Shiancoe with 27 seconds to play in regulation time to set up the overtime, then hooked up with Bernard Berrian on a 22-yard pass in the fifth minute of extra time to move the Vikings into position for the winning kick and an improbable victory.
The 41-year-old quarterback completed 36 of 47 passes with two touchdowns and two interceptions in easily his best performance of the season. It was his first 400-yard game since 1993. The 16 years, 337 days between 400-yard games is the longest gap in NFL history.
Percy Harvin had nine catches for a career-high 126 yards and Adrian Peterson racked up 144 total yards and two touchdowns for the Vikings, who were dogged all week by questions about Childress's job security.
Asked if he felt he was playing for Childress's job, Favre said: "I felt like I was playing for mine. I'm just being honest.
"Have I always got along with my coach, head coach, quarterbacks coach, offensive co-ordinator? No. Do I always agree with the plays that are called? No.
"Why should that factor into me wanting to be the best player I can be?"
LaRod Stephens-Howling returned a kick 96 yards for a touchdown and Michael Adams returned a fumble 30 yards for a score for the Cardinals, who appeared to have the victory all but nailed down after stopping the Vikings on fourth-and-goal from the one-yard line with a little over six minutes to play and a 24-10 lead.
But Favre directed scoring drives of 40 and 77 yards, quickly turning chants of "Fire Childress!" to "Let's Go Vikings!"
"I think they came expecting to see an execution," Childress said. "And it ended up a pretty good football game at the end."

The smuggler
Eldarir had arrived at JFK in January 2020 with three suitcases, containing goods he valued at $300, when he was directed to a search area.
Officers found 41 gold artefacts among the bags, including amulets from a funerary set which prepared the deceased for the afterlife.
Also found was a cartouche of a Ptolemaic king on a relief that was originally part of a royal building or temple.
The largest single group of items found in Eldarir’s cases were 400 shabtis, or figurines.
Khouli conviction
Khouli smuggled items into the US by making false declarations to customs about the country of origin and value of the items.
According to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, he provided “false provenances which stated that [two] Egyptian antiquities were part of a collection assembled by Khouli's father in Israel in the 1960s” when in fact “Khouli acquired the Egyptian antiquities from other dealers”.
He was sentenced to one year of probation, six months of home confinement and 200 hours of community service in 2012 after admitting buying and smuggling Egyptian antiquities, including coffins, funerary boats and limestone figures.

Their provenance is described in near identical terms as the British Museum shabti: bought from Salahaddin Sirmali, "authenticated and appraised" by Hossen Rashed, then imported to the US in 1948.
