The defending champions have record holders for most runs – Mahela Jayawardene – and most wickets – Lasith Malinga – in T20 international history.
Given that the former has already retired, and the latter may be hastened in to following him because of injury, Sri Lanka’s grip on their title is tenuous.
Gone are the playing riches of the recent past and if the evidence of the Asia Cup is anything to go by, the cupboard might be bare for a while now.
Coach: Graham Ford
Tournament best: Winners in 2014
Match winner: Angelo Mathews
Mathews was always regarded as the bridge between the era of Muttiah Muralitharan, Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jaywardene and the next.
All those greats have gone. The next lot have yet to arrive, and Mathews seems to have been worn down by the pressure. Without a performance of note with either bat or ball in T20s for some time, he needs to relocate the golden touch asap.
New face: Dushmantha Chameera
One of the few really bright prospects to emerge in recent times for Sri Lanka; Chameera is regarded as the fastest bowler in the country.
He also showed in the Asia Cup that there is more to him than just slippery pace, as he also has a clever, back-of-the-hand slower ball, too.
Key match: Sri Lanka v West Indies, Bangalore, March 20
Predicted finish: Group stage
Squad: Angelo Mathews (captain), Lasith Malinga, Dushmantha Chameera, Dinesh Chandimal, Niroshan Dickwella, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Rangana Herath, Shehan Jayasuriya, Chamara Kapugedera, Nuwan Kulasekara, Thisara Perera, Sachithra Senanayake, Dasun Shanaka, Milinda Siriwardana, Jeffrey Vandersay
