GHANTOOT // Desert Palm-1 left the best for last to clinch the President of the UAE Cup polo final in a 10-9 thriller over Zedan of Saudi Arabia on Friday night at the Ghantoot Racing and Polo Club.
They led 10-7 through a brilliant goal from Rashid Al Bawardi, who powered his horse almost the entire length of the polo field to put his team three goals ahead with more than three minutes left in the final chukka.
Zedan fired two quick goals to close the gap, but Al Bawardi’s “goal of the night” stood good at the end for his team to clinch the tie in the 18-handicap tournament.
“I am still trying to think how I did it,” Al Bawardi said when asked to describe his solo effort after the presentation ceremony. “Perhaps it will take a couple of hours for that to sink in.”
Last year, Desert Palm-2, led by Al Bawardi’s brother Tariq, were winners, and Rashid was ecstatic that the title will remain in the family home in Dubai for another year.
“It was good team effort,” Rashid Al Bawardi said. “It was a very competitive competition with a majority of the matches going to the wire. We are glad we won at the end.
“We will celebrate this win tonight. It is a good feeling to keep this coveted title in the family home for another year.”
Desert Palm-1 led 2-1 at the end of the first chukka through their Argentine professional Santiago Laborde’s double, with compatriot and 10-goal handicapper Pablo MacDonough getting one in between for Zedan.
Zedan led the second chukka 3-2 with MacDonough on target twice and Martin Gandara scoring the other.
They went 6-3 up in the next with two more goals from MacDonough and Laborde pulling one back.
Martin Valent made it 6-4, and Al Bawardi closed it to one-goal before MacDonough regained the two-goal cushion.
Laborde and Al Bawardi then both scored twice within two minutes to level the scores at 7-7 in the penultimate chukka.
Laborde put them two goals ahead in the first three minutes of play in the final chukka before Al Bawardi’s spectacular effort.
Gandara and MacDonough – for his sixth in the match – struck late but with just 20 seconds left as Desert Palm-1 held on to emerge champions. “It is an amazing feeling to be in the winning side twice in two years,” said Laborde, who was a member of Desert Palm-2 last year.
“The third chukka made a big difference when they took a three-goal lead, but we managed to level the scores in the next and had a great final chukka to win.
“The teams were so evenly matched and competitive, even a three-goal lead was not safe. We were a bit lucky on the night.
“Rashid scored a great goal. I tapped the ball for him from in front of our own goal line and he showed remarkable control to take the ball all the way to the other end and score. That goal really saved us at the end.”
In the play-off for third place, Bin Drai overcame Team Abu Dhabi 12-6.

What is the FNC?
The Federal National Council is one of five federal authorities established by the UAE constitution. It held its first session on December 2, 1972, a year to the day after Federation.
It has 40 members, eight of whom are women. The members represent the UAE population through each of the emirates. Abu Dhabi and Dubai have eight members each, Sharjah and Ras al Khaimah six, and Ajman, Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain have four.
They bring Emirati issues to the council for debate and put those concerns to ministers summoned for questioning.
The FNC’s main functions include passing, amending or rejecting federal draft laws, discussing international treaties and agreements, and offering recommendations on general subjects raised during sessions.
Federal draft laws must first pass through the FNC for recommendations when members can amend the laws to suit the needs of citizens. The draft laws are then forwarded to the Cabinet for consideration and approval.
Since 2006, half of the members have been elected by UAE citizens to serve four-year terms and the other half are appointed by the Ruler’s Courts of the seven emirates.
In the 2015 elections, 78 of the 252 candidates were women. Women also represented 48 per cent of all voters and 67 per cent of the voters were under the age of 40.

Real estate tokenisation project
Dubai launched the pilot phase of its real estate tokenisation project last month.
The initiative focuses on converting real estate assets into digital tokens recorded on blockchain technology and helps in streamlining the process of buying, selling and investing, the Dubai Land Department said.
Dubai’s real estate tokenisation market is projected to reach Dh60 billion ($16.33 billion) by 2033, representing 7 per cent of the emirate’s total property transactions, according to the DLD.
The more serious side of specialty coffee
While the taste of beans and freshness of roast is paramount to the specialty coffee scene, so is sustainability and workers’ rights.
The bulk of genuine specialty coffee companies aim to improve on these elements in every stage of production via direct relationships with farmers. For instance, Mokha 1450 on Al Wasl Road strives to work predominantly with women-owned and -operated coffee organisations, including female farmers in the Sabree mountains of Yemen.
Because, as the boutique’s owner, Garfield Kerr, points out: “women represent over 90 per cent of the coffee value chain, but are woefully underrepresented in less than 10 per cent of ownership and management throughout the global coffee industry.”
One of the UAE’s largest suppliers of green (meaning not-yet-roasted) beans, Raw Coffee, is a founding member of the Partnership of Gender Equity, which aims to empower female coffee farmers and harvesters.
Also, globally, many companies have found the perfect way to recycle old coffee grounds: they create the perfect fertile soil in which to grow mushrooms.

Important questions to consider
1. Where on the plane does my pet travel?
There are different types of travel available for pets:
- Manifest cargo
- Excess luggage in the hold
- Excess luggage in the cabin
Each option is safe. The feasibility of each option is based on the size and breed of your pet, the airline they are traveling on and country they are travelling to.
2. What is the difference between my pet traveling as manifest cargo or as excess luggage?
If traveling as manifest cargo, your pet is traveling in the front hold of the plane and can travel with or without you being on the same plane. The cost of your pets travel is based on volumetric weight, in other words, the size of their travel crate.
If traveling as excess luggage, your pet will be in the rear hold of the plane and must be traveling under the ticket of a human passenger. The cost of your pets travel is based on the actual (combined) weight of your pet in their crate.
3. What happens when my pet arrives in the country they are traveling to?
As soon as the flight arrives, your pet will be taken from the plane straight to the airport terminal.
If your pet is traveling as excess luggage, they will taken to the oversized luggage area in the arrival hall. Once you clear passport control, you will be able to collect them at the same time as your normal luggage. As you exit the airport via the ‘something to declare’ customs channel you will be asked to present your pets travel paperwork to the customs official and / or the vet on duty.
If your pet is traveling as manifest cargo, they will be taken to the Animal Reception Centre. There, their documentation will be reviewed by the staff of the ARC to ensure all is in order. At the same time, relevant customs formalities will be completed by staff based at the arriving airport.
4. How long does the travel paperwork and other travel preparations take?
This depends entirely on the location that your pet is traveling to. Your pet relocation compnay will provide you with an accurate timeline of how long the relevant preparations will take and at what point in the process the various steps must be taken.
In some cases they can get your pet ‘travel ready’ in a few days. In others it can be up to six months or more.
5. What vaccinations does my pet need to travel?
Regardless of where your pet is traveling, they will need certain vaccinations. The exact vaccinations they need are entirely dependent on the location they are traveling to. The one vaccination that is mandatory for every country your pet may travel to is a rabies vaccination.
Other vaccinations may also be necessary. These will be advised to you as relevant. In every situation, it is essential to keep your vaccinations current and to not miss a due date, even by one day. To do so could severely hinder your pets travel plans.
