Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini is looking for his in-form side to continue to show the consistency needed to win back the Premier League title after they equalled a club record run of nine consecutive league wins.
Since losing to major rivals Manchester United 4-2 in April, City have proved unstoppable.
And while their late run last season was not enough to prevent Chelsea from winning the league, City are top of the table three games into the current campaign after a 2-0 success at Everton equalled a club best last set in 1912.

After watching goals from Aleksandar Kolarov and Samir Nasri give City only a second win in seven attempts at Goodison Park, Pellegrini said “I knew about that” referencing the record.
“It is important that we have nine points this season and also finished last season playing very well because it is not easy to win six games in a row.
“We are continuing the way we finished last season. If you want to win silverware you have to be consistent.
“The important thing is to be a consistent team until the end. That is why it was important to win here because Everton are a very difficult team.
“It is so difficult to compare. It is my third season here in this team. In my first we won both the Premier League and the League Cup and we were the highest scoring team in the history of the competition.
“The important thing is that we are in a new season, that we started playing well in three games and we can score goals in every game and that is why we have scored eight goals and have three clean sheets.
“It is important, we are just starting the season, but to continue in what we are doing.”
Everton manager Roberto Martinez claimed City’ first goal had been crucial in deciding the outcome after his side hit the crossbar just before half-time through Romelu Lukaku.
Martinez, whose side lost for the first time this season, said: “We weren’t clinical enough in front of goal but in terms of effort and a proper confrontation against, in my eyes, the best team in the league at the moment we can take a lot of positives for a real strong platform in order to work towards what’s ahead of us.
“Today they were at their very best, when they only need half a chance to hurt you. We are younger and have more potential but need to fulfil that.”
Everton were watched by River Plate defender Ramiro Funes Mori, whose proposed £6 million (Dh34.5m) move to Merseyside is expected to be completed once he has passed a medical and received a work permit.
“He is a player who is 24, a left-footed centre-half who will fit the squad extremely well,” said the Everton coach.
“You don’t get many opportunities of signing a player who has won the Copa Libertadores and bring that winning mentality into the squad.
“I expect to complete three signing before the window closes.”
Martinez, who again stressed that he expects Chelsea transfer target John Stones to stay at Goodison Park, has also been linked with Dynamo Kiev forward Andriy Yarmolenko and Shakhtar Donetsk forward Bernard.

What the law says
Micro-retirement is not a recognised concept or employment status under Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations (as amended) (UAE Labour Law). As such, it reflects a voluntary work-life balance practice, rather than a recognised legal employment category, according to Dilini Loku, senior associate for law firm Gateley Middle East.
“Some companies may offer formal sabbatical policies or career break programmes; however, beyond such arrangements, there is no automatic right or statutory entitlement to extended breaks,” she explains.
“Any leave taken beyond statutory entitlements, such as annual leave, is typically regarded as unpaid leave in accordance with Article 33 of the UAE Labour Law. While employees may legally take unpaid leave, such requests are subject to the employer’s discretion and require approval.”
If an employee resigns to pursue micro-retirement, the employment contract is terminated, and the employer is under no legal obligation to rehire the employee in the future unless specific contractual agreements are in place (such as return-to-work arrangements), which are generally uncommon, Ms Loku adds.

Conflict, drought, famine
Estimates of the number of deaths caused by the famine range from 400,000 to 1 million, according to a document prepared for the UK House of Lords in 2024.
It has been claimed that the policies of the Ethiopian government, which took control after deposing Emperor Haile Selassie in a military-led revolution in 1974, contributed to the scale of the famine.
Dr Miriam Bradley, senior lecturer in humanitarian studies at the University of Manchester, has argued that, by the early 1980s, “several government policies combined to cause, rather than prevent, a famine which lasted from 1983 to 1985. Mengistu’s government imposed Stalinist-model agricultural policies involving forced collectivisation and villagisation [relocation of communities into planned villages].
The West became aware of the catastrophe through a series of BBC News reports by journalist Michael Buerk in October 1984 describing a “biblical famine” and containing graphic images of thousands of people, including children, facing starvation.
Band Aid
Bob Geldof, singer with the Irish rock group The Boomtown Rats, formed Band Aid in response to the horrific images shown in the news broadcasts.
With Midge Ure of the band Ultravox, he wrote the hit charity single Do They Know it’s Christmas in December 1984, featuring a string of high-profile musicians.

Live Aid was a series of simultaneous concerts that took place at Wembley Stadium in London, John F Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia, the US, and at various other venues across the world.
