AL AIN // Ali Al Wahibi's early cracker gave Al Ain a 1-0 victory over promoted Ajman in last night's Etisalat Cup Group C at the Khalifa bin Zayed Stadium. Wahibi fired a fizzing, looping shot into the far side of the net after a corner arrived at his feet via flicks from Andre Sangahor and Andre Diaz, who back-heeled the ball towards the unmarked midfielder to score from inside the area.
It was a game of many chances and Ain were the dominant side in the first half, but poor finishing from their frontline - Moroccan Soufiane Alloudi, Brazilian Diaz and Senegalese Sangahor - kept their lead to just one goal All three missed glorious chances - Alloudi failed to control a long ball inside the area, Diaz's sliding effort was smothered by a defender and Sangahor lost his footing in front of an open goal.
Ajman began in a more cautious manner, understandably so, against the dangerous Ain side. Ain were weakened though, with five of their players on national duty for Wednesday's World Cup qualifier with South Korea. They were also without striker Jorge Valdivia, on duty for his native Chile against Ecuador. Ajman had a couple of shots fired at the Ain goal. Javad Kazemian's effort from inside the Ain penalty area didn't have the punch to beat Waleed Salem and Ali Samereh's effort went wide.
The Ain goalkeeper later punched away a free-kick from a crowded goalmouth and did well to cling on to 25-yard shot, both efforts from Samereh, to keep his team's lead at the break. Ain had a glorious chance to double their lead early in the second half, but Sangahor failed to latch on to a pass from Diaz in front of an empty goal. The coach Winfried Schaefer didn't take long in replacing the lanky Senegalese with Togo's Prince Cusie on the hour.
The change didn't bring any joy though, as Diaz squandered another golden opportunity to put his side on the safe-zone. The Brazilian was gifted the ball inside the area, but lobbed it wide with only the charging Mohammed Hussain to beat. Ajman made some valiant efforts, but the closest the visitors came in cancelling the lead was a free-kick from Sameer Ibrahim that went through the Ain defensive wall only to be well held by Waleed Salem late in the game. @Email:apassela@thenational.ae
