As Dirk Kuyt leads Feyenoord on Sunday at Den Haag on the back of hat-tricks in each of his last two Eredivisie fixtures, we take a look at the Dutchman’s career and points to the fact that he is known more for his hard work, but less for his talent as a goalscorer.
Tough luck
None of the teams Kuyt has represented in his long career would ever doubt his industry or even his generosity as a colleague.
But the Dutchman has seldom been greatly appreciated for his aesthetic qualities – as a goalscorer or provider.
That can be tough when you are from the Netherlands, a country that likes to think it helped make the sport more attractive on the eye.
Dutch barge
But listen to the supporters of Feyenoord, and Kuyt – who turned 35 in July – can do no wrong. On Wednesday night he contributed decisively to a 1-0 win over fierce rivals Ajax in the Dutch Cup.
His pressure on Ajax’s Joel Veltman forcing his marker to deflect a cross into his own net just ahead of the final whistle.
“Typical Kuyt,” Ajax coach and former Dutch star Frank de Boer muttered, suspecting the striker had barged the Ajax man.
Hustle and bustle
Though not a tall man, Kuyt certainly knows how to outmuscle opponents.
And despite making his name as a reliable goalscorer, coaches have through preferred to use his qualities of stamina, industry and tenacity outside the penalty area.
At the last World Cup, he could often be spotted at right-wing back. At Liverpool, where he spent six seasons, he was frequently deployed in wide positions.
The Mersey to the Bosphorus
Kuyt is in his second spell at Feyenoord, where he scored 71 league goals in three seasons up until 2006.
He then joined Liverpool, where his gumption made him popular with supporters, but his versatility may in some ways have worked to his disadvantage.
He was never a prolific scorer there, as he had been in the Eredivisie. Similarly, during his three seasons at Fenerbahce, the goals-to-games ratio tailed off, but he still contributed substantially to the 2013-14 Super Lig title.
Lots of goals
He has 10 goals in 10 league matches this season, and his club went into this weekend locked on 25 points at the top of the table with Ajax.
“With his character and his desire, he is pulling everybody in the team upwards,” said his Feyenoord coach, Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

The smuggler
Eldarir had arrived at JFK in January 2020 with three suitcases, containing goods he valued at $300, when he was directed to a search area.
Officers found 41 gold artefacts among the bags, including amulets from a funerary set which prepared the deceased for the afterlife.
Also found was a cartouche of a Ptolemaic king on a relief that was originally part of a royal building or temple.
The largest single group of items found in Eldarir’s cases were 400 shabtis, or figurines.
Khouli conviction
Khouli smuggled items into the US by making false declarations to customs about the country of origin and value of the items.
According to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, he provided “false provenances which stated that [two] Egyptian antiquities were part of a collection assembled by Khouli's father in Israel in the 1960s” when in fact “Khouli acquired the Egyptian antiquities from other dealers”.
He was sentenced to one year of probation, six months of home confinement and 200 hours of community service in 2012 after admitting buying and smuggling Egyptian antiquities, including coffins, funerary boats and limestone figures.
For sale
A number of other items said to come from the collection of Ezeldeen Taha Eldarir are currently or recently for sale.
Their provenance is described in near identical terms as the British Museum shabti: bought from Salahaddin Sirmali, "authenticated and appraised" by Hossen Rashed, then imported to the US in 1948.

HIV on the rise in the region
A 2019 United Nations special analysis on Aids reveals 37 per cent of new HIV infections in the Mena region are from people injecting drugs.
New HIV infections have also risen by 29 per cent in western Europe and Asia, and by 7 per cent in Latin America, but declined elsewhere.
Egypt has shown the highest increase in recorded cases of HIV since 2010, up by 196 per cent.
Access to HIV testing, treatment and care in the region is well below the global average.

Real estate tokenisation project
Dubai launched the pilot phase of its real estate tokenisation project last month.
The initiative focuses on converting real estate assets into digital tokens recorded on blockchain technology and helps in streamlining the process of buying, selling and investing, the Dubai Land Department said.
Dubai’s real estate tokenisation market is projected to reach Dh60 billion ($16.33 billion) by 2033, representing 7 per cent of the emirate’s total property transactions, according to the DLD.
