Everton rejected a bid of £10m from Arsenal for the centre-back Phil Jagielka, according to Press Association Sport.
The agency reported that the latest bid was £2m lower than the one made 12 months ago by the London club.
Meanwhile, Thomas Vermaelen said Arsenal must forget about their nightmare end to last season if they are finally to deliver a trophy in 2012.
Vermaelen believes the disappointments must be put out of the players' minds if they are to end a six-year trophy drought.
Queens Park Rangers
Neil Warnock, the QPR manager, said that he is unlikely to be given any cash from the potential sale of Adel Taarabt to sign new recruits.
The 22-year-old playmaker was a key figure in the west Londoners' Championship triumph last season and picked up the Football League Player of the Year accolade for his performances. Taarabt conceded yesterday he could still play for QPR next season.
"We're talking with Paris Saint-Germain, but nothing is done," he said. "We're very close, but if no deal is reached then I will play for QPR in the Premier League."
Newcastle
The Newcastle boss Alan Pardew faces an anxious wait for news on the extent of Hatem Ben Arfa's latest injury.
The 24-year-old Frenchman was heading back to Tyneside yesterday after being carried off the pitch on a stretcher during the friendly clash with Sporting Kansas City, the first game of the club's US Tour, in the early hours of yesterday morning.
The full extent of Ben Arfa's injury will not be known until the swelling has subsided, but both he and his manager will hope the initial indications, that it is not serious, were correct.
Manchester United
Ashley Young has called the decision to quit Aston Villa for Manchester United a "no-brainer". With his contract due to expire at the end of the coming season, it was always likely he would leave Villa.
Young, 26, had already decided where his future lay; it was just a question of confirming his £17 million (Dh102m) move to Old Trafford. "There was never any doubt once I knew United were interested," he said.
"When one of the biggest clubs in the world comes after you, whether to sign for them or not is a no-brainer.
Sunderland
Steve Bruce, the Sunderland manager, is taking a relaxed approach to John O'Shea's injury problem.
The 30-year-old former Manchester United defender limped out of Sunday's 1-1 draw with Arminia Bielefeld in Germany and sat out the 3-1 defeat by Hannover on Wednesday night.
O'Shea will also miss tomorrow's clash with Borussia Monchengladbach and faces a further two weeks on the sidelines as he attempts to return to fitness.
However, his manager said he will not rush him. Bruce told the Sunderland Echo: "It's disappointing that John hasn't played here, but we have still got three weeks left."
West Bromwich Albion
Roy Hodgson has acknowledged his interest in bringing the goalkeeper Ben Foster to The Hawthorns, and the Black Country club are in talks with Birmingham.
Unconfirmed reports suggested the Blues would be willing to allow Foster, who has currently made himself unavailable for England, to leave St Andrew's on loan over the coming season in a bid to reduce their wage bill as they continue to count the cost of relegation to the Championship.
