Tom Ince says that a move to Inter Milan would have been a dream, but joining Hull City was the better move to improve him as a player.
After leaving Blackpool the 22-year-old was courted by a host of clubs, with Inter widely believed to be at the front of the queue for his signature, but he decided against following in the footsteps of his father Paul and signed a two year deal at the KC Stadium instead.
“It was close, I spent three or four days out there. I stood in the San Siro and I thought I was in a dream,” Ince said. “But those types of moves I feel can come if you perform. I’m still a young player and I feel this is not only the time to prove to myself that I can play in the Premier League but this is the right move for me at the right time.”
Ince says that new manager Steve Bruce was the key factor in him choosing Hull. He has a long running relationship with Bruce through his father and their days together at Manchester United.
“I’m under the right development and like the way the gaffer (Steve Bruce) plays. He knows what I can do and he can enhance my skills and once I do that a few years down the line if there’s another option abroad then maybe I’ll take that chance then. Right now the opportunity of playing Premier League is the right one for me,” Ince added.
“I’ve known the gaffer for quite some time not only on a personal basis, but he believes in me as a football player.
“When you have that belief from a manager and seeing what the club did last year, with the FA Cup run obviously being the highlight, to be part of that is a great opportunity.”
Ince is one of four new faces to sign on the dotted line at the KC Stadium so far this season, with Jake Livermore returning after a loan spell in 2013/14, Robert Snodgrass moving from Norwich and 20-year-old striker Karim Rossi also joining Hull after finding first-team opportunities hard to come by at Stoke.
“Not many people realise the squad that Hull have. They’ve got a lot of British players, especially throughout the core of the team and you don’t see that often now in the Premier League,” Ince said.
“With the new British players we’ve got coming in and the ones already here we’re a strong team with a lot of talent and there could be a few surprises this year from Hull.”
Those sentiments were echoed by new teammate Livermore, who was still deemed surplus to requirements at Tottenham despite his starring role for Hull last season.
“We’ve brought Tom in and he’s a great asset and Snodgrass we know can do it in the Premier League,” Livermore said.
“It just sends out a good vibe that the club want to go somewhere with British football. We’ve got a great core at the club be it through the Irish, Scottish or English and we all get along well on and off the pitch which is very important and we look to be going places.”
Hull’s FA Cup endeavours last year have earned them a place in this season’s Europa League third-round qualifiers and Livermore is looking forward to playing in Europe again after doing so at Spurs.
“If you asked me whether I’d rather be abroad playing football or just away on holiday I know where I’d want to be,” he added.
“I loved playing in Europe. It was great travelling across the world playing in different countries and experiencing different opposition with different styles of football ... The players are all still young but the coaches are all still learning too and it’s also great for the fans to go around the world too. We’re all really looking forward to it.”
