Manchester City last night confirmed that the Argentina international Carlos Tevez is joining the club, on a five-year contract. The striker, 25, has finished a two-year loan spell at City's Premier League arch-rivals Manchester United. The deal marks another major transfer for City. Subject to passing a medical, Tevez will join the England midfielder Gareth Barry and Paraguay striker Roque Santa Cruz, who cost a combined £30 million (Dh178m), as the club, owned by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed, looks to challenge for honours next season. The Premier League and Football Association ratified the deal as the player's registration was previously owned by an investment consortium and not a club. City's manager, Mark Hughes, said he was delighted to have Tevez on board. He siad: "Carlos is an international player of the highest class who possesses all the attributes that will help drive this club forward. "This is yet another deal that shows the commitment of Sheikh Mansour to make this club the very best it can possibly be." City's spending is not expected to stop there. After pulling out of a move for Samuel Eto'o, another striker is wanted and Arsenal's Emmanuel Adebayor could be a target. akhan@thenational.ae
