LONDON // The achievements of Jose Mourinho at Chelsea will never be forgotten. Successive Premier League titles in 2005 and 2006 under his leadership helped make them the kings of English football.
On Sunday, the "Special One" sent a message to John Terry, the Chelsea captain, as the club walloped Wigan 8-0 to reclaim their throne and then vowed to surpass all that Mourinho had done at Stamford Bridge.
"Yeah, I had a text from him. 'Champagne'. Simple as that," revealed Terry.
With his matchday shirt bagged, ready to clean and frame to go alongside the ones from the previous triumphs with the Portuguese, Terry duly celebrated.
But, inadvertently, Mourinho had a part to play in this success. When his Inter Milan side beat Chelsea in the Champions League quarter-final, Terry said it pushed them on to beat Manchester United to the title and spark the possibility of a historic double with the FA Cup final against Portsmouth to come on Saturday.
"That gave us the determination and the focus," he said. "We had a get-together like everyone knows and we spoke openly. That was important at the time.
"This is right up there with the first one we won. Honestly, I have been embarrassed to not win this trophy for three years. It's hurt so, so deep inside.
"But it's the greatest feeling ever, I promise you [when you win it]. It means so much to me, my players.
"That's what we want year after year. Hopefully this shirt and this medal will go alongside the other two, and hopefully many more.
"We want to kick on again next year. Year after year, just keep winning the trophy back to back."
It has been an emotional campaign for Terry following the revelations of his personal life and an alleged affair with Vanessa Perroncel, the former partner of Wayne Bridge, his one-time Chelsea and England teammate.
But he added: "People come out and say it's been difficult for me, but I have said all along that only I can say that and it's not been difficult for me. I just wanted to get on with my football which I have done.
"I am delighted with my form this season coming into the World Cup, winning the Premier League and hopefully going to Wembley and lifting the FA Cup and doing the double. Going down in history as the club captain means the world to me. Something I want to keep doing is winning trophies for this football club."
Carlo Ancelotti, the Chelsea manager, has predicted that, with money to strengthen the squad, the club could dominate the English game again, as they did in Mourinho's era. Terry agreed and wants Chelsea to keep hold of key players such as Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba, and also Joe Cole and Nicolas Anelka, whose futures are uncertain.
"I wanted these kind of people to stay," he added. "It's important we keep these players year after year because they are a nightmare to play against," he said.
