Rafael Nadal has had much to celebrate since returning to his favourite European clay last month after enduring what has been the most traumatic year of his tennis life.
Of all the statistics churned out during a triumphant Masters Series sequence which stretched through Monte Carlo, Rome and then Madrid last weekend, the one which will surely please the rehabilitated Spaniard most is the number 6,880.
That is Nadal's latest rolling total of ATP rankings points accumulated over the past 12 injury-interrupted months.
It takes him back ahead of Serbia's Novak Djokovic to No 2 in the world, guaranteeing that he cannot meet Roger Federer, the world No 1, until the final of the forthcoming French Open at Roland Garros.
The two top names in the men's game have enjoyed a fascinating, friendly and, above all, respectful rivalry since the emerging Nadal stunned Federer, the Wimbledon champion, in an early round of the Miami tournament in 2004.
Nadal has gone on to notch up 13 more victories over the Swiss, 12 of them in finals of important events all around the world.
It would have been a travesty if the undisputed King of Clay - he was unbeaten at Roland Garros from his debut in 2005 to his shock fourth-round defeat by Robin Soderling last year - had been drawn in Federer's half of the 128-man field for the second grand slam tournament of the year.
Federer would also have dreaded that possibility of a premature reunion with his nemesis as he prepares to defend what proved to be, until Nadal's injury problems of last summer, the most difficult to win of his 16 grand slam titles.
A 22nd showdown in Court Philippe Chatrier on June 6 between the pair who have dominated men's tennis for the past decade is far from a certainty, as Soderling famously demonstrated last year, but it is a much more appealing prospect than a semi-final tussle.

Micro-retirement is not a recognised concept or employment status under Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations (as amended) (UAE Labour Law). As such, it reflects a voluntary work-life balance practice, rather than a recognised legal employment category, according to Dilini Loku, senior associate for law firm Gateley Middle East.
“Some companies may offer formal sabbatical policies or career break programmes; however, beyond such arrangements, there is no automatic right or statutory entitlement to extended breaks,” she explains.
“Any leave taken beyond statutory entitlements, such as annual leave, is typically regarded as unpaid leave in accordance with Article 33 of the UAE Labour Law. While employees may legally take unpaid leave, such requests are subject to the employer’s discretion and require approval.”
If an employee resigns to pursue micro-retirement, the employment contract is terminated, and the employer is under no legal obligation to rehire the employee in the future unless specific contractual agreements are in place (such as return-to-work arrangements), which are generally uncommon, Ms Loku adds.

How the UAE gratuity payment is calculated now
Employees leaving an organisation are entitled to an end-of-service gratuity after completing at least one year of service.
The tenure is calculated on the number of days worked and does not include lengthy leave periods, such as a sabbatical. If you have worked for a company between one and five years, you are paid 21 days of pay based on your final basic salary. After five years, however, you are entitled to 30 days of pay. The total lump sum you receive is based on the duration of your employment.
1. For those who have worked between one and five years, on a basic salary of Dh10,000 (calculation based on 30 days):
a. Dh10,000 ÷ 30 = Dh333.33. Your daily wage is Dh333.33
b. Dh333.33 x 21 = Dh7,000. So 21 days salary equates to Dh7,000 in gratuity entitlement for each year of service. Multiply this figure for every year of service up to five years.
2. For those who have worked more than five years
c. 333.33 x 30 = Dh10,000. So 30 days’ salary is Dh10,000 in gratuity entitlement for each year of service.
Note: The maximum figure cannot exceed two years total salary figure.

One in nine do not have enough to eat
Created in 1961, the World Food Programme is pledged to fight hunger worldwide as well as providing emergency food assistance in a crisis.

Outside emergencies, the WFP provides school meals to up to 25 million children in 63 countries, while working with communities to improve nutrition. Where possible, it buys supplies from developing countries to cut down transport cost and boost local economies.

Where to buy art books in the UAE
There are a number of speciality art bookshops in the UAE.
In Dubai, The Lighthouse at Dubai Design District has a wonderfully curated selection of art and design books. Alserkal Avenue runs a pop-up shop at their A4 space, and host the art-book fair Fully Booked during Art Week in March. The Third Line, also in Alserkal Avenue, has a strong book-publishing arm and sells copies at its gallery. Kinokuniya, at Dubai Mall, has some good offerings within its broad selection, and you never know what you will find at the House of Prose in Jumeirah. Finally, all of Gulf Photo Plus’s photo books are available for sale at their show.
In Abu Dhabi, Louvre Abu Dhabi has a beautiful selection of catalogues and art books, and Magrudy’s – across the Emirates, but particularly at their NYU Abu Dhabi site – has a great selection in art, fiction and cultural theory.
In Sharjah, the Sharjah Art Museum sells catalogues and art books at its museum shop, and the Sharjah Art Foundation has a bookshop that offers reads on art, theory and cultural history.
