Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships updates: Ons Jabeur set up clash with Elina Svitolina, Julia Goerges and Annett Kontaveit crash out

Former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko's miserable start to the season continued in Dubai after losing in the first round to American world No 117 Jennifer Brady 6-4, 6-0. Ostapenko, who won only two matches in five tournaments leading up to Dubai, was defeated 6-4, 6-0 in one hour and 15 minutes. Neither player proved potent on serve in the first set, with three breaks apiece, although Brady managed to hold for a 5-4 lead before breaking Ostapenko to take the opener. The second set was then a washout as Brady rattled off three successive breaks to clinch the match and set up a second round clash with either France's Caroline Garcia or Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. Soon after Julia Goerges became the first seed of the day to lose, Estonia's Annett Kontaveit followed suit after the 15th seed crashed out to China's Shuai Zhang 7-6, 6-3 on Court Three. Despite struggling early on serve, Kontaveit, the world No 21, took a 3-1 lead in the opening set, only for Zhang to level at 3-3. The remainder of the set went with serve until Zhang claimed the all-important break to lead 6-5 before closing out the set. The second set followed a similar pattern: after exchanging early breaks, the set went with serve before Kontaveit was broken to hand Zhang a 5-3 lead as the Chinese world No 39 closed out the match on serve. Zhang will face Carla Suarez Navarro in the second round after the Spaniard defeated Czech Barbora Strycova 6-1, 6-3. Germany's Julia Goerges became the first seed to tumble on Monday when the 13th seed was beaten in straight sets by American Alison Riske 6-4, 7-5. Goerges' usually potent serve wavered on Centre Court as world No 51 Riske broke the Wimbledon semi-finallist three times in the opening set. Goerges responded in ideal fashion by breaking the American in the first game of the second set before holding to love. However, her advantage only last one more game as Riske levelled at 2-2 before the American reeled off another two games to take a 4-2 lead. Goerges did break back as the set went to 5-5, and she held firm to resist the first match point. But after a comfortable hold from Riske to lead 6-5, Goerges wilted as Riske closed out the victory on her second match point. Riske will next face France's Alize Cornet - the 2014 finallist - in the second round. American youngster Sofia Kenin wasted little time in her first round match, needing just one hour and 14 minutes to defeat Romania's Mihaela Buzarnescu 6-3, 6-0. After the first six games went with the server, Kenin broke for a 4-3 lead and again to close out the set. From that point, the 20-year-old American was in the zone, breaking Buzarnescu three times in a row to storm to victory. Kenin will face last year's finallist Daria Kasatkina in the second round. Tunisian Ons Jabeur reached the second round of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships on Monday to set up a match with defending champion Elina Svitolina. The world No 56 got the better of Donna Vekic with a 6-4, 7-6 victory in the opening match on Centre Court. Jabeur, 24, showed her intent from the start against the world No 25 by breaking the Croatian in her opening service game. Although Vekic would get the match back on serve in the fourth game, Jabeur broke again in the seventh game to take the set. The second set continued the see-saw feel to the match as both players broke twice on their way to a tie-break. Jabeur secured victory on her third match point to take the tie-break 11-9. She will next face Svitolina, the No 6 seed, who is looking to become the first player to win women's Dubai title three times in a row. It will be the third time that Jabeur has taken on Svitolina, with the Ukrainian having won the previous two encounters.
