DUBAI // Novak Djokovic is irritated by the fact that he is yet to make a successful defence of any of his 16 titles. The articulate Serbian, who overcame Spain's David Ferrer 12 months ago to secure a first triumph in the Dubai Championships, is hungry for an elusive repeat at the Aviation Club this week.
"It's about time I retained one of my titles," said Djokovic, the world No 2 who last night became the top-ranked player in the 32-man line-up following the withdrawal of Roger Federer.
Djokovic, who if the seedings prove accurate over the next six days will face Britain's Andy Murray in Saturday's final, accepts that his chances of more glory have increased considerably by Federer's surprise exit but pointed out: "Even without him it's going to be a tough tournament."
As doubts remain about Rafael Nadal's ability to regain the No 1 ranking because of the Spaniard's recurring fitness problems, the likelihood is that Djokovic and Murray will eventually fight it out to succeed the Swiss. "I think I deserve my ranking," declared Djokovic, mindful that his long-standing friend Murray overtook him for a spell last year. "I had a fantastic end to the season," he added, referring to his autumn victories in Beijing, Basle and Paris. "That enabled me to get to No 2 and I am now hoping to go a step further. My lifetime goal has been to become the best in the world and I'm determined to achieve that."
Djokovic, 22, who opens his title defence tonight against Spain's Guillermo Garcia Lopez, accepts his mission is a tough one. "There is a quite a large group now of new players capable of winning majors," he said. "And winning slams leads automatically to improved rankings. I think I have several rivals for the honour and I reckon the main ones are [Andy] Murray, [Juan Martin] Del Potro, [Jo-Wilfried] Tsonga and [Andy] Roddick."
Djokovic, like so many other players, always enjoys returning to the UAE, even though his first experience of residence at the "seven star" Burj Al Arab was quite embarrassing.
"I went out to practise in my shorts and T-shirt and when I came back, hot and sweaty, everybody else was dressed for dinner in really fancy clothes," he recalled. "I won't be doing that again."

Credit Score explained
What is a credit score?
In the UAE your credit score is a number generated by the Al Etihad Credit Bureau (AECB), which represents your credit worthiness – in other words, your risk of defaulting on any debt repayments. In this country, the number is between 300 and 900. A low score indicates a higher risk of default, while a high score indicates you are a lower risk.
Why is it important?
Financial institutions will use it to decide whether or not you are a credit risk. Those with better scores may also receive preferential interest rates or terms on products such as loans, credit cards and mortgages.
How is it calculated?
The AECB collects information on your payment behaviour from banks as well as utilitiy and telecoms providers.
How can I improve my score?
By paying your bills on time and not missing any repayments, particularly your loan, credit card and mortgage payments. It is also wise to limit the number of credit card and loan applications you make and to reduce your outstanding balances.
How do I know if my score is low or high?
By checking it. Visit one of AECB’s Customer Happiness Centres with an original and valid Emirates ID, passport copy and valid email address. Liv. customers can also access the score directly from the banking app.
How much does it cost?
A credit report costs Dh100 while a report with the score included costs Dh150. Those only wanting the credit score pay Dh60. VAT is payable on top.
The rules on fostering in the UAE
A foster couple or family must:
- be Muslim, Emirati and be residing in the UAE
- not be younger than 25 years old
- not have been convicted of offences or crimes involving moral turpitude
- be free of infectious diseases or psychological and mental disorders
- have the ability to support its members and the foster child financially
- undertake to treat and raise the child in a proper manner and take care of his or her health and well-being
- A single, divorced or widowed Muslim Emirati female, residing in the UAE may apply to foster a child if she is at least 30 years old and able to support the child financially

Defining head lice
Pediculus humanus capitis are tiny wingless insects that feed on blood from the human scalp. The adult head louse is up to 3mm long, has six legs, and is tan to greyish-white in colour. The female lives up to four weeks and, once mature, can lay up to 10 eggs per day. These tiny nits firmly attach to the base of the hair shaft, get incubated by body heat and hatch in eight days or so.
Identifying lice
Lice can be identified by itching or a tickling sensation of something moving within the hair. One can confirm that a person has lice by looking closely through the hair and scalp for nits, nymphs or lice. Head lice are most frequently located behind the ears and near the neckline.
Treating lice at home
Head lice must be treated as soon as they are spotted. Start by checking everyone in the family for them, then follow these steps. Remove and wash all clothing and bedding with hot water. Apply medicine according to the label instructions. If some live lice are still found eight to 12 hours after treatment, but are moving more slowly than before, do not re-treat. Comb dead and remaining live lice out of the hair using a fine-toothed comb.
After the initial treatment, check for, comb and remove nits and lice from hair every two to three days. Soak combs and brushes in hot water for 10 minutes.Vacuum the floor and furniture, particularly where the infested person sat or lay.

How the UAE gratuity payment is calculated now
Employees leaving an organisation are entitled to an end-of-service gratuity after completing at least one year of service.
The tenure is calculated on the number of days worked and does not include lengthy leave periods, such as a sabbatical. If you have worked for a company between one and five years, you are paid 21 days of pay based on your final basic salary. After five years, however, you are entitled to 30 days of pay. The total lump sum you receive is based on the duration of your employment.
1. For those who have worked between one and five years, on a basic salary of Dh10,000 (calculation based on 30 days):
a. Dh10,000 ÷ 30 = Dh333.33. Your daily wage is Dh333.33
b. Dh333.33 x 21 = Dh7,000. So 21 days salary equates to Dh7,000 in gratuity entitlement for each year of service. Multiply this figure for every year of service up to five years.
2. For those who have worked more than five years
c. 333.33 x 30 = Dh10,000. So 30 days’ salary is Dh10,000 in gratuity entitlement for each year of service.
Note: The maximum figure cannot exceed two years total salary figure.
