Day 3 of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships is all about the second round as the remaining 16 players battle to reach the quarter-finals.
Three former champions remain in the draw as 2017 winner Andy Murray opens Centre Court against Italian fourth seed Jannik Sinner, before world No 1 Novak Djokovic leads the evening session against Russia's Karen Khachanov aiming to continue his bid for a sixth title. Over on Court One, Spanish eighth seed and 2018 winner Roberto Bautista Agut competes in the final match of the day against Czech qualifier Jiri Vesely.
Shapovalov marches on
Denis Shapovalov marched into the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships quarter-finals with a convincing straight sets win over Japan's Taro Daniel in the last match on Centre Court.
After being pushed the distance in his opening round by Marton Fucsovics, this was a more comfortable outing for the Canadian sixth seed, who earned the only break of the first set in the seventh game.
Shapovalov broke twice in succession in the second set as part of a four-game winning streak that sent him through to the last eight, where he will take on Ricardas Berankis following the Lithuanian's 6-4, 7-6 victory over Australia's Alexei Popyrin.
Djokovic comes through Khachanov test
Top seed Novak Djokovic kept alive his bid for a sixth title at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships after coming through a thrilling second round clash against Russia's Karen Khachanov.
Djokovic, playing in his first tournament of the season, moved into the quarter-finals with a 6-3, 7-6 victory over the world No 26 following a match packed with quality from both players.
The 34-year-old Serb looked to be on course for a routine win having followed up a comfortable first set with a 3-1 lead in the second, but Khachanov threw caution to the wind and unloaded some big shots to force his way back into the contest and earned his break back to level at 4-4.
The set, and ultimately the match, was decided in a tiebreak and Djokovic clinched the victory with a stunning return on the Khachanov serve.
The 20-time Grand Slam champion next faces Jiri Vesely in the last eight after the Czech qualifier produced a shock win over Spanish eighth seed Roberto Bautista Agut 6-2, 6-4 over on Court One.
Rublev rallies to advance
Andrey Rublev fought back from dropping the first set against South Korea's Soonwoo Kwon to advance to the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships quarter-finals 4-6, 6-0, 6-3.
The Russian second seed, who arrived in Dubai early Tuesday morning after winning the title in Marseille and played his first round match later that evening, was slow out of the blocks as Kwon broke in the first game of the match. The Korean was rock solid on serve and eventually closed out the set without facing a break point.
The second set was a different story, though, as Rublev quickly established his dominance and after three straight breaks, swept the world No 60 to level the match.
Rublev only needed one break in the deciding set, coming in the fourth game, and the world No 7 sealed the win on his first match point after one hour and 43 minutes. He will face Mackenzie McDonald in the quarter-finals after the American continued his fine form in Dubai, following up his opening round win over defending champion Aslan Karatsev by defeating Serbia's Filip Krajinovic 6-4, 7-6.
Sinner gets his revenge
Andy Murray was defeated in the second round of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships after fourth seed Jannick Sinner claimed a fairly comfortable 7-5, 6-2 victory in the first match on Centre Court.
Sinner lost his previous meeting with Murray at the Stockholm Open last season, but the 20-year-old Italian was much the better player in Dubai, particularly in the second set. Most of the first set went with serve until former world No 1 Murray was broken in the 11th game and allowed Sinner to serve it out.
The second set, though, was one-way traffic as Sinner broke in the first and fifth games to establish a 5-1 lead and he closed out the victory having not faced any break points after one hour and 43 minutes.
"I lost the last match to him so I tried to stay focused on my game," Sinner said. "I think I played well, especially in the first set and during some difficult moments, so I'm very happy."
On facing Murray, Sinner said: "He's a legend; winning three Grand Slams and many, many more tournaments. He's had so many unfortunate moments, many surgeries, so his fighting spirit is incredible. I wish him the best of luck."
The world No 10 will take on Hubert Hurkacz in Thursday's quarter-finals after the Polish fifth seed cruised past Slovakian qualifier Alex Moclan 6-3, 6-2.

Tightening the screw on rogue recruiters
The UAE overhauled the procedure to recruit housemaids and domestic workers with a law in 2017 to protect low-income labour from being exploited.
Only recruitment companies authorised by the government are permitted as part of Tadbeer, a network of labour ministry-regulated centres.
A contract must be drawn up for domestic workers, the wages and job offer clearly stating the nature of work.
The contract stating the wages, work entailed and accommodation must be sent to the employee in their home country before they depart for the UAE.
The contract will be signed by the employer and employee when the domestic worker arrives in the UAE.
Only recruitment agencies registered with the ministry can undertake recruitment and employment applications for domestic workers.
Penalties for illegal recruitment in the UAE include fines of up to Dh100,000 and imprisonment
But agents not authorised by the government sidestep the law by illegally getting women into the country on visit visas.
Chef Nobu's advice for eating sushi

Citizenship-by-investment programmes
United Kingdom
The UK offers three programmes for residency. The UK Overseas Business Representative Visa lets you open an overseas branch office of your existing company in the country at no extra investment. For the UK Tier 1 Innovator Visa, you are required to invest £50,000 (Dh238,000) into a business. You can also get a UK Tier 1 Investor Visa if you invest £2 million, £5m or £10m (the higher the investment, the sooner you obtain your permanent residency).
All UK residency visas get approved in 90 to 120 days and are valid for 3 years. After 3 years, the applicant can apply for extension of another 2 years. Once they have lived in the UK for a minimum of 6 months every year, they are eligible to apply for permanent residency (called Indefinite Leave to Remain). After one year of ILR, the applicant can apply for UK passport.
The Caribbean
Depending on the country, the investment amount starts from $100,000 (Dh367,250) and can go up to $400,000 in real estate. From the date of purchase, it will take between four to five months to receive a passport.
Portugal
The investment amount ranges from €350,000 to €500,000 (Dh1.5m to Dh2.16m) in real estate. From the date of purchase, it will take a maximum of six months to receive a Golden Visa. Applicants can apply for permanent residency after five years and Portuguese citizenship after six years.
“Among European countries with residency programmes, Portugal has been the most popular because it offers the most cost-effective programme to eventually acquire citizenship of the European Union without ever residing in Portugal,” states Veronica Cotdemiey of Citizenship Invest.
Greece
The real estate investment threshold to acquire residency for Greece is €250,000, making it the cheapest real estate residency visa scheme in Europe. You can apply for residency in four months and citizenship after seven years.
Spain
The real estate investment threshold to acquire residency for Spain is €500,000. You can apply for permanent residency after five years and citizenship after 10 years. It is not necessary to live in Spain to retain and renew the residency visa permit.
Cyprus
Cyprus offers the quickest route to citizenship of a European country in only six months. An investment of €2m in real estate is required, making it the highest priced programme in Europe.
Malta
The Malta citizenship by investment programme is lengthy and investors are required to contribute sums as donations to the Maltese government. The applicant must either contribute at least €650,000 to the National Development & Social Fund. Spouses and children are required to contribute €25,000; unmarried children between 18 and 25 and dependent parents must contribute €50,000 each.
The second step is to make an investment in property of at least €350,000 or enter a property rental contract for at least €16,000 per annum for five years. The third step is to invest at least €150,000 in bonds or shares approved by the Maltese government to be kept for at least five years.
Candidates must commit to a minimum physical presence in Malta before citizenship is granted. While you get residency in two months, you can apply for citizenship after a year.
Egypt
A one-year residency permit can be bought if you purchase property in Egypt worth $100,000. A three-year residency is available for those who invest $200,000 in property, and five years for those who purchase property worth $400,000.

Should late investors consider cryptocurrencies?
Wealth managers recommend late investors to have a balanced portfolio that typically includes traditional assets such as cash, government and corporate bonds, equities, commodities and commercial property.
They do not usually recommend investing in Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies due to the risk and volatility associated with them.
“It has produced eye-watering returns for some, whereas others have lost substantially as this has all depended purely on timing and when the buy-in was. If someone still has about 20 to 25 years until retirement, there isn’t any need to take such risks,” Rupert Connor of Abacus Financial Consultant says.
He adds that if a person is interested in owning a business or growing a property portfolio to increase their retirement income, this can be encouraged provided they keep in mind the overall risk profile of these assets.
