Naomi Osaka will defend her US Open title after the world No 2 was confirmed on the entry list for the fourth and final Grand Slam tournament of the season, organisers said on Wednesday.
Osaka undertook a mid-season hiatus after withdrawing from the French Open following her first round match and subsequently missed Wimbledon. The Japanese 23-year-old cited mental health reasons for the break, which came after she shunned mandatory media obligations at Roland Garros - a decision that cost her a fine.
The four-time major champion is set to make her return to competition at the Tokyo Olympics, where she is one of the host nation's leading hopes for a medal. She is then also scheduled to play in Montreal next month.
Osaka will be part of a women's field at the US Open that will include world No 1 Ash Barty, who lifted her second major title at Wimbledon earlier this month.
A total of 15 major winners, including Simona Halep and Garbine Muguruza, are scheduled to feature in the women's field at Flushing Meadows.
In the men's section, former champions Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal – currently tied for the men's record of 20 Grand Slam singles titles – will resume their quest for more silverware in New York.
World No 1 Djokovic, fresh from his third major triumph of 2020 at Wimbledon, is aiming to become the first man since Australia's Rod Laver in 1969 to complete a calendar year sweep. The 34-year-old Serb is currently in Tokyo for the Olympics where a gold medal would would keep him on track for the golden Grand Slam.
Another former champion, Andy Murray, who is currently ranked 104, failed to make the main draw but remains the first player on the alternate list and would likely be awarded a wildcard by organisers if he fails to gain automatic entry.
Defending men's champion Dominic Thiem is also on the entry list as he continues to recover from a wrist injury that forced him to miss Wimbledon and the Olympics.
The US Open will be held with 100 per cent fan capacity from August 30 to September 12.

Should late investors consider cryptocurrencies?
Wealth managers recommend late investors to have a balanced portfolio that typically includes traditional assets such as cash, government and corporate bonds, equities, commodities and commercial property.
They do not usually recommend investing in Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies due to the risk and volatility associated with them.
“It has produced eye-watering returns for some, whereas others have lost substantially as this has all depended purely on timing and when the buy-in was. If someone still has about 20 to 25 years until retirement, there isn’t any need to take such risks,” Rupert Connor of Abacus Financial Consultant says.
He adds that if a person is interested in owning a business or growing a property portfolio to increase their retirement income, this can be encouraged provided they keep in mind the overall risk profile of these assets.
Unresolved crisis
Russia and Ukraine have been locked in a bitter conflict since 2014, when Ukraine’s Kremlin-friendly president was ousted, Moscow annexed Crimea and then backed a separatist insurgency in the east.
Fighting between the Russia-backed rebels and Ukrainian forces has killed more than 14,000 people. In 2015, France and Germany helped broker a peace deal, known as the Minsk agreements, that ended large-scale hostilities but failed to bring a political settlement of the conflict.
The Kremlin has repeatedly accused Kiev of sabotaging the deal, and Ukrainian officials in recent weeks said that implementing it in full would hurt Ukraine.
Credit Score explained
What is a credit score?
In the UAE your credit score is a number generated by the Al Etihad Credit Bureau (AECB), which represents your credit worthiness – in other words, your risk of defaulting on any debt repayments. In this country, the number is between 300 and 900. A low score indicates a higher risk of default, while a high score indicates you are a lower risk.
Why is it important?
Financial institutions will use it to decide whether or not you are a credit risk. Those with better scores may also receive preferential interest rates or terms on products such as loans, credit cards and mortgages.
How is it calculated?
The AECB collects information on your payment behaviour from banks as well as utilitiy and telecoms providers.
How can I improve my score?
By paying your bills on time and not missing any repayments, particularly your loan, credit card and mortgage payments. It is also wise to limit the number of credit card and loan applications you make and to reduce your outstanding balances.
How do I know if my score is low or high?
By checking it. Visit one of AECB’s Customer Happiness Centres with an original and valid Emirates ID, passport copy and valid email address. Liv. customers can also access the score directly from the banking app.
How much does it cost?
A credit report costs Dh100 while a report with the score included costs Dh150. Those only wanting the credit score pay Dh60. VAT is payable on top.
