There are few venues as hostile for visiting football teams as Istanbul. Tonight, the European Champions Spain will play in Turkey's biggest city in a World Cup qualifier, with the hosts needing victory. The noise and colour from the terraces will invade the senses of every player, inspiring the local heroes and intimidating their foes.
And the Turks will be vengeful after Saturday's 1-0 defeat by the Spaniards in Madrid's Bernabéu.
Spain would have wilted in such circumstances in the past. While Spanish teams of yore were packed with individual talents, they never fulfilled their potential at the highest level of international competition. Last summer's success in Vienna was their first honour at international level in 44 years, their new-found steel and spirit finally complementing their unquestioned technical ability.
Victory tonight against a strong Turkey side who reached the semi finals of Euro 2008 will see the Spaniards qualify for next year's World Cup as the runaway leaders of Group Five.
And Spain are in superb form. While sabre rattling Turkey coach Fatih Terim is right to say: "Of course we can beat Spain," after seeing his side miss three goalscoring chances on Saturday, he knows his own side's frailties, as well as his opponent's qualities.
Unbeaten in a 30-match spell stretching back to a 1-0 home defeat against Romania in November 2006, Spain have won 27 of those games and all of their last 20 matches.
Coach Vicente del Bosque has a settled squad, with a surfeit of exceptional young talent in waiting in reserve. Saturday's goalscorer, Barça's 22-year-old Catalan defender Gerard Pique, was playing in only his second international game. Spain often thrive at youth level and Pique is already a wily international performer having played for his national side at various levels since he was a schoolboy. He joins a team showing the mark of greatness in winning games even when they don't play well. Being the world's best has given Spain endless confidence.
Spain boast top-class performers in every position from goalkeeper Iker Casillas to steely defenders Sergio Ramos and Carles Puyol, midfielders of the calibre of Xavi, Andres Iniesta, Cesc Fabregas and Marcos Senna. Up front, Fernando Torres and David Villa are the deadliest pairing in international football.
Crucially, Spain work best as a unit, their attacking passing game similar to Barcelona's in club football. The regional differences which saw divisions between Basque, Catalan and Castilian players evaporated after success in Vienna.
And the transition from coach Luis Aragones to Del Bosque has been seamless. While Aragones was unabashed and controversial in the media, Del Bosque is more guarded, a clever master who was an international stalwart before turning to coaching, where he won European Cups with Madrid.
Spain are imperious and the only danger tonight could arise if any players are complacent or over confident. Which, given the competition for places is, frankly, unlikely.

The smuggler
Eldarir had arrived at JFK in January 2020 with three suitcases, containing goods he valued at $300, when he was directed to a search area.
Officers found 41 gold artefacts among the bags, including amulets from a funerary set which prepared the deceased for the afterlife.
Also found was a cartouche of a Ptolemaic king on a relief that was originally part of a royal building or temple.
The largest single group of items found in Eldarir’s cases were 400 shabtis, or figurines.
Khouli conviction
Khouli smuggled items into the US by making false declarations to customs about the country of origin and value of the items.
According to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, he provided “false provenances which stated that [two] Egyptian antiquities were part of a collection assembled by Khouli's father in Israel in the 1960s” when in fact “Khouli acquired the Egyptian antiquities from other dealers”.
He was sentenced to one year of probation, six months of home confinement and 200 hours of community service in 2012 after admitting buying and smuggling Egyptian antiquities, including coffins, funerary boats and limestone figures.

A number of other items said to come from the collection of Ezeldeen Taha Eldarir are currently or recently for sale.
Their provenance is described in near identical terms as the British Museum shabti: bought from Salahaddin Sirmali, "authenticated and appraised" by Hossen Rashed, then imported to the US in 1948.

No more lice
Defining head lice
Pediculus humanus capitis are tiny wingless insects that feed on blood from the human scalp. The adult head louse is up to 3mm long, has six legs, and is tan to greyish-white in colour. The female lives up to four weeks and, once mature, can lay up to 10 eggs per day. These tiny nits firmly attach to the base of the hair shaft, get incubated by body heat and hatch in eight days or so.
Identifying lice
Lice can be identified by itching or a tickling sensation of something moving within the hair. One can confirm that a person has lice by looking closely through the hair and scalp for nits, nymphs or lice. Head lice are most frequently located behind the ears and near the neckline.
Treating lice at home
Head lice must be treated as soon as they are spotted. Start by checking everyone in the family for them, then follow these steps. Remove and wash all clothing and bedding with hot water. Apply medicine according to the label instructions. If some live lice are still found eight to 12 hours after treatment, but are moving more slowly than before, do not re-treat. Comb dead and remaining live lice out of the hair using a fine-toothed comb.
After the initial treatment, check for, comb and remove nits and lice from hair every two to three days. Soak combs and brushes in hot water for 10 minutes.Vacuum the floor and furniture, particularly where the infested person sat or lay.

What is Folia?
Prince Khaled bin Alwaleed bin Talal's new plant-based menu will launch at Four Seasons hotels in Dubai this November. A desire to cater to people looking for clean, healthy meals beyond green salad is what inspired Prince Khaled and American celebrity chef Matthew Kenney to create Folia. The word means "from the leaves" in Latin, and the exclusive menu offers fine plant-based cuisine across Four Seasons properties in Los Angeles, Bahrain and, soon, Dubai.
Kenney specialises in vegan cuisine and is the founder of Plant Food Wine and 20 other restaurants worldwide. "I’ve always appreciated Matthew’s work," says the Saudi royal. "He has a singular culinary talent and his approach to plant-based dining is prescient and unrivalled. I was a fan of his long before we established our professional relationship."
Folia first launched at The Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills in July 2018. It is available at the poolside Cabana Restaurant and for in-room dining across the property, as well as in its private event space. The food is vibrant and colourful, full of fresh dishes such as the hearts of palm ceviche with California fruit, vegetables and edible flowers; green hearb tacos filled with roasted squash and king oyster barbacoa; and a savoury coconut cream pie with macadamia crust.
In March 2019, the Folia menu reached Gulf shores, as it was introduced at the Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay, where it is served at the Bay View Lounge. Next, on Tuesday, November 1 – also known as World Vegan Day – it will come to the UAE, to the Four Seasons Resort Dubai at Jumeirah Beach and the Four Seasons DIFC, both properties Prince Khaled has spent "considerable time at and love".
There are also plans to take Folia to several more locations throughout the Middle East and Europe.
While health-conscious diners will be attracted to the concept, Prince Khaled is careful to stress Folia is "not meant for a specific subset of customers. It is meant for everyone who wants a culinary experience without the negative impact that eating out so often comes with."
