The McLaren-Mercedes driver had lost pace in the closing laps due to fuel consumption concerns, but he battled with Massa at the final corner and held on by just 0.024 seconds to delight the British crowd.

The Briton said: "In the final corner I stayed on the inside and braked as hard as I could. Fortunately, we both got around the corner in one piece and I just pipped him at the finish. The support I had when I crossed the line was as if I'd won the race - so I want to say a huge thank-you to everyone."

Pit woe for Button

It was not such good news for Hamilton's teammate, Jenson Button, as a mistake at his third and final pit stop caused the end to his race. The McLaren driver was forced to stop at the pit exit as his right tyre had not been attached and was hanging loose. The Briton, who had been running fifth, said: "The guy on the front right lost the wheel nut and turned to take another; as he turned, I think his hand moved and the guy on the front jack felt that was the trigger to lower the car. Then the lollipop lifted."

Regret for Schumacher

It was a case of what could have been for Michael Schumacher as he said a collision with Kamui Kobayashi cost him a chance of a top-five finish. The Mercedes GP driver broke his front wing as he ran into the side of the Sauber in the damp conditions early in the race. As well as having to make an early stop for repairs, the seven-time world champion was also given a drive-through penalty. He bounced back to finish ninth, but said: "My result today is a bit of a shame, and of course I am not happy about it. I think fifth or even fourth place would not have been out of question today."

Best yet for Perez

Sergio Perez is confident he has fully recovered from his heavy crash in Monaco in May as he claimed the best result of his fledgling F1 career yesterday with seventh place. The Mexican missed both the races in Monaco and Canada as a result of his shunt in Monte Carlo, but he now believes he is back to his best. The Sauber driver said: "After the accident it took me time to get back into the rhythm of the season, and find the momentum I had before it. In two weeks' time I shall be even stronger."

Frustration for Di Resta

Paul di Resta missed out on a points finish at his first British Grand Prix due to a mistake in the Force India pit. The Briton, who had been running seventh, fell down the order after having to sit in the pits as his team had been expecting his teammate Adrian Sutil. Di Resta, who went on to finish 15th, said: "I got a call to come into the pits again, but when I got there the team were expecting Adrian, so there was obviously some confusion. It cost me quite a lot of time because the boys had to run back in the garage and fetch my tyres. That cost us about 25 seconds."

Ricciardo left content

He may have finished last of the classified finishers in 19th place, but Daniel Ricciardo was pleased with his F1 debut for Hispania. "Understanding the tyres, the pit stops and the strategy, it's really very complex and something I've never really done before, so in this respect I think it was a step forward," the Australian said.
