International football was back in action this week as the Uefa Nations League kicked-off once again around Europe with the first round of matches since the outbreak of Covid-19.
Cristiano Ronaldo reached yet another milestone in his extraordinary career when he broke the 100-goal barrier as Portugal defeated Sweden 2-1.
Gareth Southgate's England plans were thrown into disarray when he was forced to drop two players, Mason Greenwood and Phil Foden, from the squad after breaching Covid-19 protocols, in between matches against Iceland and Denmark. Both players issued apologies.
There was controversy and apologies in the tennis world as well, after world No 1 Novak Djokovic was disqualified from the US Open after accidentally hitting a line judge in the throat with a ball.
The Serbian became frustrated after suffering a fall and having dropped serve to trail 5-6, hitting a ball to the back of the court, striking a female line judge.
The Tour de France continued into its second week and there was more success for UAE Team Emirates, when Tadej Pogacar edged out fellow Slovenian Primoz Roglic in a sprint finish to win Stage 8 – his first in the Tour.
