Nico Rosberg ended the first day of practice for the Bahrain Grand Prix fastest in his Williams. The German driver clocked a time of 1.33.339, finishing just under two tenths of a second ahead of Fernando Alonso, who put in an impressive lap towards the end of the session. Jarno Trulli, of Toyota, was less than one tenth of a second behind. Practice was held in hot and dry conditions that could not have differed more from the previous race in Shanghai. After the session, Rosberg, who has led seven of the last 11 practice sessions but claimed only 3.5 points this season, said: "You can only ever compare your performance to other race weekends so, relatively, I think we are looking OK. "I am really convinced that we will be able to do something positive at this race and to get the points that the car is worth." During the second practice session, track temperatures reached upwards of 51c, and Mark Webber of Red Bull, who finished fifth, was seen cooling off with dry ice. His teammate Sebastien Vettel, who won last time out in Shanghai, was in fifth. Vettel testified how difficult the conditions were for the drivers. "I think everyone was surprised how hot it is when you leave the pits in the car. It's like someone's blowing a heat gun in your face," said the German. The Ferraris of Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen continued to struggle after failing to gain a single championship point so far this season ? the Italian team's worst start to a season in 27 years. Raikkonen, who was fined 4,000 euros (Dh19,279) for speeding in the pit lane during the morning session, was seen running wide on a number of occasions. He finished in 18th, with Massa two places higher. Jenson Button, who leads the world championship, looked steady in sixth, while his compatriot Lewis Hamilton, the world champion, was in 11th. Hamilton had earlier led the first practice session ahead of BMW Sauber's Nick Heidfeld. A final practice session will take place tomorrow at 12pm UAE time, with qualifying starting at 3pm UAE time tomorrow. Keep up to date on all the latest information on the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix
