Podium double for Abu Dhabi

Ahmed al Hameli clinched a sensational victory for Team Abu Dhabi in the Grand Prix of Portugal yesterday to open his challenge for the 2010 Union Internationale Motonautique F1 World Championship title in style. "This was just the start we needed," said a delighted al Hameli. "I took my chance and am so pleased to have made such a positive start to the season."

Thani al Qamzi, his teammate, surged through the field to claim third overall and a podium double for the Abu Dhabi racing operation. The one-three finish means that Team Abu Dhabi have opened up a useful early season lead in the UIM F1 Teams' Championship. Al Hameli, 31, controlled the opening round of the eight-race series on the Arade river in Portimao to repeat the victory he secured at the same venue last year.

The Emirati now has a five-point lead in the drivers' championship over Italy's Francesco Cantando, the race runner-up. Al Qamzi had to fend off a fierce challenge over the closing laps from Qatar's Jay Price, who had been demoted by event officials from his initial pole position to 14th overall. This handed the pole to Cantando while al Hameli moved up to second on the grid. Al Hameli began to challenge the Italian into the first turn, but the race was yellow-flagged when three boats struggled off the start line and blocked the course. Al Hameli trailed Cantando after the restart and the Italian began to pull away after four of the 42 laps.

But the race was stopped by a second yellow flag situation and when it restarted on lap 10 al Hameli surged into the lead. It was halted again when Finland's Sami Selio, who was fourth overall, stalled and when the race got under way again al Hameli was able to fend off Cantando's challenge He extended his lead to five seconds with 18 laps remaining and then stretched his advantage to nine seconds as he closed in on his second race win. * Agencies

Sheikh Zayed's poem

When it is unveiled at Abu Dhabi Art, the Standing Tall exhibition will appear as an interplay of poetry and art. The 100 scarves are 100 fragments surrounding five, figurative, female sculptures, and both sculptures and scarves are hand-embroidered by a group of refugee women artisans, who used the Palestinian cross-stitch embroidery art of tatreez. Fragments of Sheikh Zayed’s poem Your Love is Ruling My Heart, written in Arabic as a love poem to his nation, are embroidered onto both the sculptures and the scarves. Your love is ruling over my heart

Your love is ruling over my heart, even a mountain can’t bear all of it

Woe for my heart of such a love, if it befell it and made it its home

You came on me like a gleaming sun, you are the cure for my soul of its sickness

You are like the Ajeed Al-reem [leader of the gazelle herd] for my country, the source of all of its knowledge

Day 4, Abu Dhabi Test: At a glance

Moment of the day Not much was expected – on Sunday or ever – of Hasan Ali as a batsman. And yet he lit up the late overs of the Pakistan innings with a happy cameo of 29 from 25 balls. The highlight was when he launched a six right on top of the netting above the Pakistan players’ viewing area. He was out next ball.

Stat of the day – 1,358 There were 1,358 days between Haris Sohail’s previous first-class match and his Test debut for Pakistan. The lack of practice in the multi-day format did not show, though, as the left-hander made an assured half-century to guide his side through a potentially damaging collapse.

The verdict As is the fashion of Test matches in this country, the draw feels like a dead-cert, before a clatter of wickets on the fourth afternoon puts either side on red alert. With Yasir Shah finding prodigious turn now, Pakistan will be confident of bowling Sri Lanka out. Whether they have enough time to do so and chase the runs required remains to be seen.

Why does a queen bee feast only on royal jelly?

Some facts about bees:

The queen bee eats only royal jelly, an extraordinary food created by worker bees so she lives much longer

The life cycle of a worker bee is from 40-60 days

A queen bee lives for 3-5 years

This allows her to lay millions of eggs and allows the continuity of the bee colony

About 20,000 honey bees and one queen populate each hive

Honey is packed with vital vitamins, minerals, enzymes, water and anti-oxidants.

Apart from honey, five other products are royal jelly, the special food bees feed their queen

Pollen is their protein source, a super food that is nutritious, rich in amino acids

Beewax is used to construct the combs. Due to its anti-fungal, anti-bacterial elements, it is used in skin treatments

Propolis, a resin-like material produced by bees is used to make hives. It has natural antibiotic qualities so works to sterilize hive, protects from disease, keeps their home free from germs. Also used to treat sores, infection, warts

Bee venom is used by bees to protect themselves. Has anti-inflammatory properties, sometimes used to relieve conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, nerve and muscle pain

Honey, royal jelly, pollen have health enhancing qualities

The other three products are used for therapeutic purposes

Is beekeeping dangerous?

As long as you deal with bees gently, you will be safe, says Mohammed Al Najeh, who has worked with bees since he was a boy.

“The biggest mistake people make is they panic when they see a bee. They are small but smart creatures. If you move your hand quickly to hit the bees, this is an aggressive action and bees will defend themselves. They can sense the adrenalin in our body. But if we are calm, they are move away.”
