Sebastian Loeb, winner of the last seven Rally Germany events, was on course to extend his streak after the opening day in Trier yesterday. Loeb won the first three stages and was 8.2secs ahead of Dani Sordo, his Citroen teammate, following the opening loop and seemingly en route to victory in Germany for an eighth successive time.
Petter Solberg won the opening afternoon stage, but Loeb won the day's fifth stage and Sordo rounded off a successful day for Citroen in the ninth round of the World Rally Championship with victory in the sixth test.
Loeb, the six-time world champion, was 9.5secs ahead of Sordo at the end of the opening day, with BP Ford Abu Dhabi's Jari-Matti Latvala, the Rally Finland winner, 1min 04.7secs adrift in third and Sebastien Ogier (Citroen) a further six seconds behind in fourth.
Loeb is 48 points clear in the title race ahead of Ogier, and appears poised to extend his lead.
"It is going very well - a good start with three best times in the first three stages. The feeling with the car was good," said Loeb.
Following the fifth test, which Loeb won by more than 1.7secs from Sordo, he said: "I pushed really hard and it paid off."
BP Ford Abu Dhabi's Mikko Hirvonen was fifth after the opening day, 1:14.5 behind Loeb.
Latvala, 25, said: "My target for this rally was to finish in the top five. I'm in third, so I'm very happy with that. It's a strange feeling for me to be in a podium position in an asphalt rally. The car has improved since the last asphalt round in Bulgaria ... it feels more stable."
He added: "There's still work to do with both car and driver but although it's not easy for me on asphalt, I'm enjoying it."
Hirvonen, 30, said: "I didn't have the consistency I would like and I need to improve that before the long stage in the military area. I need to be ready for that. Thankfully the forecast suggests it will be dry, because I wasn't looking forward to that in the wet."

The smuggler
Eldarir had arrived at JFK in January 2020 with three suitcases, containing goods he valued at $300, when he was directed to a search area.
Officers found 41 gold artefacts among the bags, including amulets from a funerary set which prepared the deceased for the afterlife.
Also found was a cartouche of a Ptolemaic king on a relief that was originally part of a royal building or temple.
The largest single group of items found in Eldarir’s cases were 400 shabtis, or figurines.
Khouli conviction
Khouli smuggled items into the US by making false declarations to customs about the country of origin and value of the items.
According to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, he provided “false provenances which stated that [two] Egyptian antiquities were part of a collection assembled by Khouli's father in Israel in the 1960s” when in fact “Khouli acquired the Egyptian antiquities from other dealers”.
He was sentenced to one year of probation, six months of home confinement and 200 hours of community service in 2012 after admitting buying and smuggling Egyptian antiquities, including coffins, funerary boats and limestone figures.

A number of other items said to come from the collection of Ezeldeen Taha Eldarir are currently or recently for sale.
Their provenance is described in near identical terms as the British Museum shabti: bought from Salahaddin Sirmali, "authenticated and appraised" by Hossen Rashed, then imported to the US in 1948.

- A coffin lid dating back to 664BC-332BC was offered for sale by a Colorado-based art dealer, with a starting price of $65,000
- A shabti that was on sale through a Chicago-based coin dealer, dating from 1567BC-1085BC, is up for $1,950
Real estate tokenisation project
Dubai launched the pilot phase of its real estate tokenisation project last month.
The initiative focuses on converting real estate assets into digital tokens recorded on blockchain technology and helps in streamlining the process of buying, selling and investing, the Dubai Land Department said.
Dubai’s real estate tokenisation market is projected to reach Dh60 billion ($16.33 billion) by 2033, representing 7 per cent of the emirate’s total property transactions, according to the DLD.
