Defending champion Nasser Al Attiyah has promised not to take his foot off the gas in the remaining two stages of the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge despite his sizeable lead at the top of the standings after three days of impeccable driving in his Toyota Hilux Overdrive.
Winner of the first two stages by comfortable margins, the two-time Dakar champion from Qatar made it three in a row by finishing 16 minutes and 35 seconds ahead of the UAE’s Sheikh Khalid Al Qassimi in the 288.73-kilometre Al Ain Water stage.
The win has increased Al Attiyah’s overall advantage over second-placed Sheikh Khalid to 39:38.1, which is already greater than his winning margin of 32:13 in Abu Dhabi last year, but the defending two-time World Cup for Cross Country Rallies champion is in no mood to let-up.
“Two days to go, but we will drive at the same pace,” said Al Attiyah, who had dominated the World Cup last year, winning all six rallies he entered to finish 164 points clear at the top. “It’s a good pace. The car is working very well and it was a perfect stage for us.
“It was much cooler today in the car. We do not have air conditioning. We saw 51°C degrees yesterday. Today was better and it also gives more performance from the engine.”
Sheikh Khalid and co-driver Khaled Al Kendi, driving the 2017 Dakar-winning Peugeot 3008 DKR, lost more than eight minutes yesterday because of losing their way twice. A relative newcomer to the world of cross country rallies, the Abu Dhabi Racing chairman was, however, pleased to not just maintain second place in the overall classification but increased his lead to 64:57.3 seconds over third-placed Czech driver Martin Prokop.
“It was not an easy stage for us, not difficult, but about 20km into the stage the organisers decided to alter the route a bit,” Sheikh Khalid said. “We found ourselves in an area where it was difficult to climb the dunes so we deflated our tyres.
“Then about 170km in, we made a small mistake and found ourselves near the fence [with Saudi Arabia] and lost time. Then again we lost our way a bit another 50km further, but thankfully we eventually found our way.
“The big dunes and windy conditions did not make driving any easier, but we finished second again today and are still second overall in the classifications. That, however, is not the most important thing for me – the important thing is gaining more and more experience in this format of racing.”
In the bikes category, the 2017 Dakar champion Sam Sunderland stormed back into the lead following a stunning ride through the dunes and he now holds an advantage of 3:06.7 over Chilean rider Pablo Quintanilla.
“It was a good day,” said Sunderland, the Dubai-based Briton who has started the day fifth in the classifications. “I caught all the guys before the refuel, which I was really happy about.
“I couldn’t see everyone after the start and I started to feel a little nervous to see whether I was catching them or not. You don’t know. I got to the refuel and I saw them just before me. After that it was good and I kind of cruised back. I feel happy. I felt fast.”
In the quads section, multiple world champion Rafal Sonik moved to the top of the classifications despite finishing second behind Dutchman Kees Koolen in Stage 3. He leads his Polish compatriot Kamil Wisniewski by 2:08.6.
“We have had some problems and delays, so it was nice to have a good stage and a clean run,” Sonik said.

His life in brief: Born in a village near Galilee, he lived in exile for most of his life and started writing poetry after high school. He was arrested several times by Israel for what were deemed to be inciteful poems. Most of his work focused on the love and yearning for his homeland, and he was regarded the Palestinian poet of resistance. Over the course of his life, he published more than 30 poetry collections and books of prose, with his work translated into more than 20 languages. Many of his poems were set to music by Arab composers, most significantly Marcel Khalife. Darwish died on August 9, 2008 after undergoing heart surgery in the United States. He was later buried in Ramallah where a shrine was erected in his honour.

The flights
Direct flights from the UAE to the Nepalese capital, Kathmandu, are available with Air Arabia, (www.airarabia.com) Fly Dubai (www.flydubai.com) or Etihad (www.etihad.com) from Dh1,200 return including taxes. The trek described here started from Jomson, but there are many other start and end point variations depending on how you tailor your trek. The trek
Restricted area permits (US$500 per person) are required for trekking in the Upper Mustang area. The challenging Meso Kanto pass between Tilcho Lake and Jomson should not be attempted by those without a lot of mountain experience and a good support team. Sugary teas and iced coffees
The tax authority is yet to release a list of the taxed products, but it appears likely that sugary iced teas and cold coffees will be hit.
For instance, the non-fizzy drink AriZona Iced Tea contains 65 grams of sugar – about 16 teaspoons – per 680ml can. The average can costs about Dh6, which would rise to Dh9.
Cold coffee brands are likely to be hit too. Drinks such as Starbucks Bottled Mocha Frappuccino contain 31g of sugar in 270ml, while Nescafe Mocha in a can contains 15.6g of sugar in a 240ml can.

Conflict, drought, famine
Estimates of the number of deaths caused by the famine range from 400,000 to 1 million, according to a document prepared for the UK House of Lords in 2024.
It has been claimed that the policies of the Ethiopian government, which took control after deposing Emperor Haile Selassie in a military-led revolution in 1974, contributed to the scale of the famine.
Dr Miriam Bradley, senior lecturer in humanitarian studies at the University of Manchester, has argued that, by the early 1980s, “several government policies combined to cause, rather than prevent, a famine which lasted from 1983 to 1985. Mengistu’s government imposed Stalinist-model agricultural policies involving forced collectivisation and villagisation [relocation of communities into planned villages].
The West became aware of the catastrophe through a series of BBC News reports by journalist Michael Buerk in October 1984 describing a “biblical famine” and containing graphic images of thousands of people, including children, facing starvation.
Band Aid
Bob Geldof, singer with the Irish rock group The Boomtown Rats, formed Band Aid in response to the horrific images shown in the news broadcasts.
With Midge Ure of the band Ultravox, he wrote the hit charity single Do They Know it’s Christmas in December 1984, featuring a string of high-profile musicians.
Following the single’s success, the idea to stage a rock concert evolved.
Live Aid was a series of simultaneous concerts that took place at Wembley Stadium in London, John F Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia, the US, and at various other venues across the world.
The combined event was broadcast to an estimated worldwide audience of 1.5 billion.
