Alex McLeish, the Birmingham manager, will decide on the future of his on-loan striker Christian Benitez in the next fortnight after he scored his first home goal in the 2-1 win over Burnley. Benitez, an Ecuador international, has been on a season-long loan from Mexican club Santos Laguna and Birmingham have the option of signing him permanently. "We have a deadline of May 25 to decide what we want to do. He has done well for us and we have to consider everything," said McLeish. Benitez netted his fourth goal of the campaign, adding to an own-goal from the Burnley goalkeeper Brian Jensen, as Birmingham remained unbeaten in 15 games at home - "a marvellous achievement" - according to McLeish. Everton's hopes of a Europa League place ended amid controversy at the Britannia Stadium. Needing a victory to keep their hopes alive, they found the net in the 72nd minute through Phil Jagielka. He seemed to have scored the winner, following a corner from Mikel Arteta, only for referee Howard Webb to rule out the defender's effort apparently because Victor Anichebe was offside.
