Ibrahim Adel scored a stunning brace of goals as Egypt beat Spain 2-1 to deliver the biggest shock so far in the men's football competition at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Having won their previous two group games to wrap up qualification with a match to spare, the Spanish made a raft of changes in Bordeaux on Tuesday and were made to pay a heavy price by a Pharaohs side who needed a result to be certain of qualification themselves.
The Pyramids winger Adel did the damage with two superb goals - one either side of half-time - before Samu Omorodion pulled one back for La Roja in the closing stages. Egyptian fans were made to suffer through 10 minutes of injury time before their side's victory was confirmed.
The win lifted the Egyptians into top spot in Group C, meaning they will now be rewarded with a more favourable last-eight tie. That is likely to be against one of Paraguay, Mali or Israel in Marseille on Friday.
The Spanish, who were relegated into the runners-up slot by this defeat, will now almost certainly face Japan in Lyon, also on Friday. The Japanese are one of the tournament's in-form sides having won both of their group games so far in convincing fashion.
With qualification for the quarter-finals in the bag, La Roja boss Santi made 10 changes to the side that had beaten the Dominican Republic on Saturday. However, such is Spain's depth that they still boasted an XI packed with emerging talent from across La Liga and they started strongly, dominating possession in the early stages.
That suited Egypt though and the North African side were happy to sit in a low block and look to hit Spain on the break.
Right-back Marc Pubill, who scored La Roja's opening goal of the tournament against Uzbekistan, almost got another after 20 minutes, striking the foot of the post with a low shot.
But Egypt were a threat themselves when they sprung forward, and it was one such raid up the pitch that led to the opener.
A long ball thumped into Spanish territory was brought down by the lively Zizo, who held off a Spanish defender and squared for Adel to send a brilliant curling shot high into the roof of the Spanish net, giving goalkeeper Alejandro Iturbe no chance.
Spain threw on former Manchester City player Sergio Gomez and Barcelona star Fermin Lopez to try and turn things around in the second half, but an awful error all but sealed their fate.
A blind back pass from defender Jon Pacheco across his own area sent Adel through on goal and he calmly lifted the ball over the keeper to make it 2-0.
Spain pulled one back in the 90th minute when Omordion scored with a header, but Egypt were good value for their win.
Their supporters were made to sit through 10 nervy minutes of stoppage time – although Adel almost sealed a hat-trick on the break – as the European side searched in vain for a goal that would have restored them back to the top of the group.
Morocco also booked their place in the quarter-finals alongside Argentina after wins over Iraq and Ukraine, respectively.
All four teams started the day on three points from their first two games, but it is Argentina who top the group ahead of Morocco on goal difference.
Iraq were left shell-shocked by three goals in the opening 45 minutes of their game against Morocco in Nice.
Amir Richardson opened the scoring on 19 minutes before Soufiane Rahimi, fresh off a campaign that saw him crowned an Asian Champions League winner with club side Al Ain, added a second nine minutes later.
With Iraq needing to steady the ship, they instead leaked another goal, with Abde Ezzalzouli adding a third for Morocco.
In Lyon, Argentina hit their stride with two second-half goals to send Ukraine packing.
Thiago Almada broke the deadlock two minutes after the restart before Claudio Echeverri wrapped up a 2-0 win in added time.
Morocco beat Argentina 2-1 in their opening match.
How Tesla’s price correction has hit fund managers
Investing in disruptive technology can be a bumpy ride, as investors in Tesla were reminded on Friday, when its stock dropped 7.5 per cent in early trading to $575.
It recovered slightly but still ended the week 15 per cent lower and is down a third from its all-time high of $883 on January 26. The electric car maker’s market cap fell from $834 billion to about $567bn in that time, a drop of an astonishing $267bn, and a blow for those who bought Tesla stock late.
The collapse also hit fund managers that have gone big on Tesla, notably the UK-based Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust and Cathie Wood’s ARK Innovation ETF.
Tesla is the top holding in both funds, making up a hefty 10 per cent of total assets under management. Both funds have fallen by a quarter in the past month.
Matt Weller, global head of market research at GAIN Capital, recently warned that Tesla founder Elon Musk had “flown a bit too close to the sun”, after getting carried away by investing $1.5bn of the company’s money in Bitcoin.
He also predicted Tesla’s sales could struggle as traditional auto manufacturers ramp up electric car production, destroying its first mover advantage.
AJ Bell’s Russ Mould warns that many investors buy tech stocks when earnings forecasts are rising, almost regardless of valuation. “When it works, it really works. But when it goes wrong, elevated valuations leave little or no downside protection.”
A Tesla correction was probably baked in after last year’s astonishing share price surge, and many investors will see this as an opportunity to load up at a reduced price.
Dramatic swings are to be expected when investing in disruptive technology, as Ms Wood at ARK makes clear.
Every week, she sends subscribers a commentary listing “stocks in our strategies that have appreciated or dropped more than 15 per cent in a day” during the week.
Her latest commentary, issued on Friday, showed seven stocks displaying extreme volatility, led by ExOne, a leader in binder jetting 3D printing technology. It jumped 24 per cent, boosted by news that fellow 3D printing specialist Stratasys had beaten fourth-quarter revenues and earnings expectations, seen as good news for the sector.
By contrast, computational drug and material discovery company Schrödinger fell 27 per cent after quarterly and full-year results showed its core software sales and drug development pipeline slowing.
Despite that setback, Ms Wood remains positive, arguing that its “medicinal chemistry platform offers a powerful and unique view into chemical space”.
In her weekly video view, she remains bullish, stating that: “We are on the right side of change, and disruptive innovation is going to deliver exponential growth trajectories for many of our companies, in fact, most of them.”
Ms Wood remains committed to Tesla as she expects global electric car sales to compound at an average annual rate of 82 per cent for the next five years.
She said these are so “enormous that some people find them unbelievable”, and argues that this scepticism, especially among institutional investors, “festers” and creates a great opportunity for ARK.

New process leads to panic among jobseekers
As a UAE-based travel agent who processes tourist visas from the Philippines, Jennifer Pacia Gado is fielding a lot of calls from concerned travellers just now. And they are all asking the same question.
“My clients are mostly Filipinos, and they [all want to know] about good conduct certificates,” says the 34-year-old Filipina, who has lived in the UAE for five years.
Ms Gado contacted the Philippines Embassy to get more information on the certificate so she can share it with her clients. She says many are worried about the process and associated costs – which could be as high as Dh500 to obtain and attest a good conduct certificate from the Philippines for jobseekers already living in the UAE.
“They are worried about this because when they arrive here without the NBI [National Bureau of Investigation] clearance, it is a hassle because it takes time,” she says.
“They need to go first to the embassy to apply for the application of the NBI clearance. After that they have go to the police station [in the UAE] for the fingerprints. And then they will apply for the special power of attorney so that someone can finish the process in the Philippines. So it is a long process and more expensive if you are doing it from here.”

Credit Score explained
What is a credit score?
In the UAE your credit score is a number generated by the Al Etihad Credit Bureau (AECB), which represents your credit worthiness – in other words, your risk of defaulting on any debt repayments. In this country, the number is between 300 and 900. A low score indicates a higher risk of default, while a high score indicates you are a lower risk.
Why is it important?
Financial institutions will use it to decide whether or not you are a credit risk. Those with better scores may also receive preferential interest rates or terms on products such as loans, credit cards and mortgages.
How is it calculated?
The AECB collects information on your payment behaviour from banks as well as utilitiy and telecoms providers.
How can I improve my score?
By paying your bills on time and not missing any repayments, particularly your loan, credit card and mortgage payments. It is also wise to limit the number of credit card and loan applications you make and to reduce your outstanding balances.
How do I know if my score is low or high?
By checking it. Visit one of AECB’s Customer Happiness Centres with an original and valid Emirates ID, passport copy and valid email address. Liv. customers can also access the score directly from the banking app.
How much does it cost?
A credit report costs Dh100 while a report with the score included costs Dh150. Those only wanting the credit score pay Dh60. VAT is payable on top.

Muslim Council of Elders condemns terrorism on religious sites
The Muslim Council of Elders has strongly condemned the criminal attacks on religious sites in Britain.
It firmly rejected “acts of terrorism, which constitute a flagrant violation of the sanctity of houses of worship”.
“Attacking places of worship is a form of terrorism and extremism that threatens peace and stability within societies,” it said.
The council also warned against the rise of hate speech, racism, extremism and Islamophobia. It urged the international community to join efforts to promote tolerance and peaceful coexistence.
