NHL: Devils end Penguins' win streak as Bruins match hit by blizzards

The New Jersey Devils extended their winning streak and halted Pittsburgh's in the process with a 3-1 win over the Penguins.

Brandon Sutter had given Pittsburgh the lead as they went in search of their fifth consecutive triumph, but Stefan Matteau levelled proceedings.

With the score finely balanced heading into the third period, power play goals from Adam Henrique and Bobby Butler proved the difference to help the Devils to their fourth straight victory.

Danny Briere's overtime strike ensured the Philadelphia Flyers edged out the Carolina Hurricanes 4-3.

In a topsy-turvy game that saw the lead change hands several times, Jakub Voracek, Matt Read and Brayden Schenn also scored for Philadelphia, while Jiri Tlusty, Jeff Skinner and Joe Corvo netted for the Hurricanes.

Jordan Schroeder scored his first two goals of the season as the Vancouver Canucks thrashed the Calgary Flames 5-1.

Calgary took the lead through Lee Stempniak, but that was one of few highlights as Schroeder (two), Alexandre Burrows, Kevin Bieksa and Chris Higgins led the Canucks to a comfortable win.

Shoot-out goals from Mikkel Boedker and Radium Vrbata gave the Phoenix Coyotes a 1-0 win over the San Jose Sharks.

However, it was Mike Smith who was the real hero for the Coyotes after thwarting several San Jose attacks.

Niklas Kronwall's goal in the third period gave Detroit a 2-1 triumph over the Edmonton Oilers. The Red Wings had taken the lead through Pavel Datsyuk before being pegged back by Justin Schultz.

Troy Brouwer bagged two goals, while Joel Ward, Alex Ovechkin and Mathieu Perreault added one each as the Washington Capitals snapped a three-game losing streak in spectacular fashion by shutting out the Florida Panthers 5-0.

Minnesota also claimed their first win in four, with Devin Setoguchi's power play goal in overtime giving the Wild a 2-1 success over the Nashville Predators.

Phil Kessel's goal and two assists helped the Toronto Maple Leafs hammer the Montreal Canadiens 6-0 and Alexander Sulzer scored the winner as the Buffalo Sabres squeaked past the New York Islanders 3-2.

Bobby Ryan's two goals and two assists were pivotal as the Anaheim Ducks beat the St Louis Blues 6-5, Alex Ponikarovsky scored the only goal of the game for the Winnipeg Jets against the Ottawa Senators, while the Boston Bruins' home match with the Tampa Bay Lightning was postponed after falling victim to the heavy snowfall in the area.

The match between the Tampa Bay Lightning and Boston Bruins was postponed because of the severe blizzard in the northeastern United States.

The game, which had already been pushed back from a 1pmstart to 7pm due to the expected snowstorm, will be played at a later date yet to be confirmed.

SUNDERLAND 2002-03

No one has ended a Premier League season quite like Sunderland. They lost each of their final 15 games, taking no points after January. They ended up with 19 in total, sacking managers Peter Reid and Howard Wilkinson and losing 3-1 to Charlton when they scored three own goals in eight minutes.

SUNDERLAND 2005-06

Until Derby came along, Sunderland’s total of 15 points was the Premier League’s record low. They made it until May and their final home game before winning at the Stadium of Light while they lost a joint record 29 of their 38 league games.

HUDDERSFIELD 2018-19

Joined Derby as the only team to be relegated in March. No striker scored until January, while only two players got more assists than goalkeeper Jonas Lossl. The mid-season appointment Jan Siewert was to end his time as Huddersfield manager with a 5.3 per cent win rate.

ASTON VILLA 2015-16

Perhaps the most inexplicably bad season, considering they signed Idrissa Gueye and Adama Traore and still only got 17 points. Villa won their first league game, but none of the next 19. They ended an abominable campaign by taking one point from the last 39 available.

FULHAM 2018-19

Terrible in different ways. Fulham’s total of 26 points is not among the lowest ever but they contrived to get relegated after spending over £100 million (Dh457m) in the transfer market. Much of it went on defenders but they only kept two clean sheets in their first 33 games.

LA LIGA: Sporting Gijon, 13 points in 1997-98.

BUNDESLIGA: Tasmania Berlin, 10 points in 1965-66

Three ways to limit your social media use

Clinical psychologist, Dr Saliha Afridi at The Lighthouse Arabia suggests three easy things you can do every day to cut back on the time you spend online.

1. Put the social media app in a folder on the second or third screen of your phone so it has to remain a conscious decision to open, rather than something your fingers gravitate towards without consideration.

2. Schedule a time to use social media instead of consistently throughout the day. I recommend setting aside certain times of the day or week when you upload pictures or share information.

3. Take a mental snapshot rather than a photo on your phone. Instead of sharing it with your social world, try to absorb the moment, connect with your feeling, experience the moment with all five of your senses. You will have a memory of that moment more vividly and for far longer than if you take a picture of it.

Why it pays to compare

A comparison of sending Dh20,000 from the UAE using two different routes at the same time - the first direct from a UAE bank to a bank in Germany, and the second from the same UAE bank via an online platform to Germany - found key differences in cost and speed. The transfers were both initiated on January 30.

Route 1: bank transfer

The UAE bank charged Dh152.25 for the Dh20,000 transfer. On top of that, their exchange rate margin added a difference of around Dh415, compared with the mid-market rate.

Total cost: Dh567.25 - around 2.9 per cent of the total amount

Total received: €4,670.30

Route 2: online platform

The UAE bank’s charge for sending Dh20,000 to a UK dirham-denominated account was Dh2.10. The exchange rate margin cost was Dh60, plus a Dh12 fee.

Total cost: Dh74.10, around 0.4 per cent of the transaction

Total received: €4,756

The UAE bank transfer was far quicker – around two to three working days, while the online platform took around four to five days, but was considerably cheaper. In the online platform transfer, the funds were also exposed to currency risk during the period it took for them to arrive.
