NEW YORK // The injury-hit New York Giants have raided the fledgling United Football League to replenish their depleted pool of receivers by signing Michael Clayton.

Clayton, a 2004 first-round NFL draft choice who played six seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, most recently played wide receiver for the UFL's Omaha Nighthawks, catching seven passes for 70 yards in four games this season.

The Giants are missing their leading pass catcher Hakeem Nicks and No 2 Steve Smith to injuries, while ends Ramses Barden and Victor Cruz have been sidelined for the year.

To make room on their roster, the Giants (6-4) waived tight end Jake Ballard as they prepare for Sunday's game against the visiting Jacksonville Jaguars (6-4).
